Residents of 50 Murray have launched a GoFundMe page for Eddy Henderson, a longtime doorman there who contracted covid earlier this year and suffered horrible consequences: he is now unable to work due to regular oxygen treatments and also not able to care for his wife, who is wheelchair-bound as a result of diabetes.
Michael Melocowsky organized the fundraiser and added this to the page: “Eddy and Pauline are two of the nicest and most hardworking people you could meet. Both immigrated to this country to provide a better life for their family and for years, they were able to accomplish their goal… He and his wife are unable to work. Their applications for disability and other support have encountered significant delays and they are now at risk of becoming homeless. Through no fault of their own, they are in financial trouble and need the help of the very people they were trying to serve.”
Another reader who let me know about the fundraiser sent this: “For anyone who has lived at 50 Murray – and many Tribecans have had a stint there – all knew and loved Eddy. At 6’6”, soft-spoken with a gentle disposition, he opened doors with a smile, always had a kind word, and was quick to help moms juggling strollers, grocery bags and straggling toddlers. He was, in one word – kind.”
The fund is currently at $21,000 with 80 donors.
this is a heartbreaking story. COVID has exacerbated hardships for those already struggling. it really can be the kindness of strangers that helps families get through these dark times. thank you for sharing this story…
My name is Nandy ! I work 6 years in that building as nanny and eddy was a very good door man he always helped me with my strollers ••••
So sad. This story shows the goodness of humanity.
Thank you for posting this—I live in the building and noticed I hadn’t seen Eddie in a while, but had no idea what happened or about the GoFundMe. Really appreciate you bringing awareness.
I lived in that building for years. He was kind, helpful, and great with kids – hope he gets back on his feet soon.
We’re so saddened to hear the news about Eddy. Thank you for bringing the story to the fore. My wife and I lived at 50 Murray when we first moved to NY and remember Eddy fondly. As the article states, he is a very hardworking and kind man. Please do contribute if you can and I’d hope that the management of 50 Murray will stand up and support a wonderful member of their staff in this time of need.
