Hazelden Betty Ford has renovated its sober house at 283 West Broadway (next to Pepolino between Lispenard and Canal) and will expand it to include outpatient treatment for addiction and mental health, family services and long-term support for addiction recovery. The new facility should be open by February.
The organization bought the building in 2010 — it was a failed condo conversion at the time — and has used it since then as a sober-housing facility. (For some reason it was listed as for sale, delivered empty, in August 2019, but I guess they changed their minds.) Hazelden also had a clinic in Chelsea and when that closed just before the pandemic, they decided to combine both facilities into this one.
The building has 14,000 square feet across six floors and a basement. The in-person programs in Manhattan usually serve people from throughout the metropolitan area, but in March 2020 all programming turned virtual, leaving the organization’s two sites mostly empty. When the new site opens, the organization will offer a hybrid of in-person and online services.
The expansion comes at a time when the US has seen a record number of overdose deaths and more people continue to struggle with mental health issues. Hazelden Betty Ford is the nation’s largest nonprofit system of substance use disorder treatment, mental health care, recovery resources and related prevention and education services. It opened its first New York City treatment center in 1992.
Let the NIMBY whining begin in 3,2,1…..
MB, if you are using this treatment center and it’s conveniently located for you, good for you.
Hazeldon Tribeca has quietly done wonderful work for our neighborhood and our city for almost a decade. I am glad to see that the facility’s operations will expend to help more people.
