TEN ARRESTED AT JAIL PROTEST
10 people were arrested for civil disobedience at yesterday’s protest against the mega jail scheduled for White Street. A group led by Neighbors United Below Canal attempted to block the road Baxter Street between Canal and Bayard as the city tried to start construction. Councilmember Christopher Marte asked the contractors for their permits to do the work, and when they refused to comply, the group sat in the road and chanted, “No new jails” and “Shame shame shame.” The city plans to go forward with the work.

PICK A BAGEL CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS?
I.R. wrote back about three weeks ago that Pick A Bagel had been closed by the Department of Health, and now it’s “closed for renovations.” (I tried getting in touch with them AND looking up the violations on the DOH website but nothing popped up. Might be a job for James B.) Let’s hope it’s not permanent. I am a dedicated consumer.
