DELMONICO’S FACING EVICTION
Eater has a story on a landlord-tenant dispute in Fidi, but in this case, the tenant is the country’s oldest fine dining establishment and has been at the site (with some interruptions) since 1835. Time Equities is threatening to evict Delmonico’s from 56 Beaver due to unpaid rent. From Eater: “The landlord says Delmonico’s owes nearly $300K in unpaid rent — but the restaurant’s ownership says it is legally withholding payment because the building is in need of repair.” It’s also worth checking out Tom Miller’s post from Daytonian in Manhattan on the address and the restaurant here.

THE POWER OF CHINATOWN CIVIC GROUPS
The Times has a feature on the network of Chinese civic organizations whose real estate portfolio has protected Chinatown interests, residents, restaurants and shop owners. From The Times: “Though demographic changes in Chinatown have thinned the clubs’ membership, they remain one of the last bulwarks against gentrification in an area of Lower Manhattan surrounded by luxury development. The New York Times identified at least 42 buildings owned by dozens of associations — a collection of commercial walk-ups and tenement buildings that are home to scores of small businesses and hundreds of rent-stabilized tenants. In total they are worth at least $93 million, according to city estimates, but perhaps two or three times as much on the open market.”

CHINATOWN HOMELESS SHELTERS CANCELLED
The City reports that the mayor has scrapped plans for two homeless shelters in Chinatown, though it looks like the one planned for 10 Wooster at Canal is still moving forward. I am awaiting details from DHS… From The City: “After the city’s Department of Homeless Services announced it was abandoning two proposals for homeless shelters in Chinatown in as many weeks, supporters of another proposed site in nearby SoHo are concerned that that project could be nixed next. Adding to their fears is that the shelter proposed at 10 Wooster Street shares similarities with a now-defunct homeless shelter that was planned for Morris Park in The Bronx. The DHS abruptly canceled that project in March.”
