SIGNE NIELSEN ON TRIBECA’S EVOLUTION
Curbed has a great Q&A with landscape architect Signe Nielsen, who has left her mark on the neighborhood in so many ways (Duane Park, Bogardus Plaza, Hudson River Park) and continues. They ask her if she could live anywhere in the city, where would she go, and she chooses to stay put. “I’ve lived in the same building in Tribeca for 45 years and I would definitely stay here. I live in a rent controlled building and it’s a ridiculous amount of space. It’s a historic district. The afternoon sunlight is very beautiful. I know my neighbors. I feel comfortable. There aren’t many tourists. I like how Tribeca has evolved. When I moved in, it was all warehouses and trucks. There was no dry cleaner, no shoe repair, no schools. As I grew up, so to speak, the neighborhood started to grow up. There are art galleries, clothing designers, and practical things like a dry cleaner, liquor store, and shoe repair.”
EATING YOUR WAY DOWN CANAL STREET
Eater has a great guide to the eateries of the east end of Canal Street, starting with Little Canal, the coffee shop at Essex Street, and ending with Tribeca Finest Marketplace — the bodega on the northeast corner at Sixth Ave. In between: Mel Bakery, Dimes, Xiang Mini Cake and another 25 spots.
MORE LOVE FOR MENA
Mena and chef Victoria Blamey get yet another rave, this time from The New Yorker: “The Chilean-born chef’s new Tribeca restaurant is serving some of the best seafood in the city, in deceptively simple dishes that evoke the experience of plunging into a bracing ocean wave.”
COLIN KING IS DESIGNER OF THE DAY
Surface magazine gives a shoutout to Colin King, whose studio is on White Street, as the “Designer of the Day.” He’s a stylist for product campaigns and shelter magazine spreads.
SI SWIMSUIT MODEL AMONG US
According to the Australian Sunday magazine Stellar, one of the Sports Illustrated Swim Suit Issue “rookies” — Aussie Georgina Burke — lives in Tribeca. “’Sports Illustrated is one of those things that’s on every model’s list,’ the 32-year-old tells Stellar from her home in New York’s fashionable Tribeca, where she’s just returned from a boxing workout (‘I’m lying here covered in sweat’).”
