ARTEZEN HOTEL APPROVED FOR LIQUOR LICENSE
Last winter, the Artezen Hotel at 24 John Street was the scene of a shootout between gang members who had rented several rooms in the hotel — no one was hurt, but nine people were arrested and eight guns were seized by the 1st Precinct. Since then, the owners have tried to get a liquor license and have been denied; when they came before CB1 in earlier this month the committee approved it, despite neighbors’ fierce opposition. The hotel’s lawyer said they had made efforts to reach out to the community and change their ways. But neighbors weren’t buying it. One said that the owner was “unresponsive and aggressive towards us after we pleaded to them… These people have proven themselves to be un-responsible neighbors.” It goes before the full board tonight.

NEW GALLERY AT 381 BROADWAY
A new gallery has opened in the former CBD gummy store at 381 Broadway — between White and Walker — called HB381. (Thanks to P. for the heads up.) Founded by Juliet Burrows and Kim Hostler, the gallery serves as a dedicated space for solo artist presentations, focusing on contemporary Nordic sculpture and ceramics. Hostler and Burrows founded their eponymous design gallery, Hostler Burrows, in 1998 and have established a reputation as leading specialists in 20th century Scandinavian furniture and decorative arts. Nice quiet restaurants and drinking establishments can’t stay open after 11:00pm, yet the Bd. approves this liquor license. What am I missing here?
I was surprised as well. The vote was not unanimous, but I think the committee members were swayed by the bar’s lawyer, who argued that the operator had changed his ways and that things would be better this time. The hotel has raised its rates and I guess now they are on the lookout for armed guests!
How does one look out for “armed” guests? I walked by the Roxy last night and the bouncer asked people who had a bag if they were armed. I turned my head in shock and heard him say, “Do you have any weapons in there? Guns or knives?” Someone jokingly asked “Grenades?” This is the society we are living in now.
