In the News: 60 Wall is denied landmark status

60 WALL IS DENIED LANDMARK STATUS
Crain’s has an op-ed from The City Club that decries the denial of historic designation for the atrium of 60 Wall by the Landmarks Preservation Commission: “This decision, both perplexing and deeply disconcerting, sheds light on a fundamental misinterpretation of the delicate interplay between urban development and historic preservation. In a letter to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, prominent architect Robert A.M. Stern and architectural critic Paul Goldberger have articulated a sentiment that resonates with many who understand the intrinsic value of architectural history. Their powerful prose, laced with warranted criticism, mourns the myopic stance taken by the commission. According to LPC, financial prosperity apparently trumps historic preservation. A specious view at best, and one certainly not rooted in economic reality.”

CELEBRATING THE OLD STOREFRONTS
PRINT magazine has a feature on James and Karla Murray, whose IG account — soo worth following, it’s great — and books document the city’s old storefronts. The feature has one of their shots of Pearl Paint, which really takes you back.

NEW GALLERY ON WALKER
Surface magazine has a feature on the new gallery Tiwa Select, a “mainstay of the Los Angeles design sphere” that has moved into the fifth floor of 86 Walker. The first show is bold Murano glass lighting and vessels by Dana Arbib. “Alex Tieghi-Walker’s Tiwa Select gallery recently—and at long last—has opened a permanent location in New York City. Fittingly for its new home in a 1915 electrical parts factory in TriBeCa, its first show brings some serious voltage.”

ONE PARK ROW TOPS OUT
Yimby has a rendering of 1 Park Row (that’s the old building, above), which I have never been able to get even though I have asked nicely a dozen times! The building is 23 stories, 305 feet tall and will have 58 condominium units in one- to three-bedroom layouts along with 19,000 square feet of office and retail space on the lower levels.

  1. Is there anything still to be done about the lobby at 60 Wall, or is its destruction a foregone conclusion?

I used to live a block away from its cocaine madness, and it’s a sight. It really just needs sprucing up. We can’t keep losing parts of our history. And I don’t even like PoMo.

  2. Sanity at Landmarks! I thought the atrium at 60 Wall was hideous and the worst in New York when it opened back in the 80’s and it is even worse now. Demolish ASAP and give us something fresh and new!
