THREE STARS FOR EULALIE
Pete Wells at The Times gushes over Eulalie, the restaurant on West Broadway and N. Moore from husband and wife Tina Vaughn and Chip Smith. (J. sent the email in advance of publication so you will have to look it up.) The answering machine — they only take reservations by phone — is already full. From The Times: “Mr. Smith comes from North Carolina, and good things happen in the kitchen when he goes back to his roots. He cooks an appetizer that merges the trotter croquettes known in France as cromesquis with Carolina barbecue. Surrounding a tower of pulled pork are Japanese turnips and their greens in a vinegar-spiked potlikker. Ms. Vaughn says she reserves standing tables for customers who come in at the same time every week and have done so for years. You’ll understand why when you taste these trotters.”
MORE ON FRENCHETTE BAKERY AT THE WHITNEY
The Times also has a mention of the new offerings at the restaurant at the Whitney, run by Frenchette Bakery: “The spacious kitchen has permitted the executive pastry chef, Michelle Palazzo, to expand her repertoire to more elaborate pastries, also being sold, like pistachio Paris-Brest and tarte au citron.”
HAMPTON INN ON PEARL STREET SOLD
Crain’s reports that the Hampton Inn at 320 Pearl right under the Brooklyn Bridge was recently sold for $24 million. They paid $5 million less than the purchase price in 2007; the city Department of Finance from January said the property has a market value of $9.2 million.
CITI TO CUT 20,000 JOBS
The Post reports that Citigroup plans to eliminate 20,000 jobs over the next two years, but it’s unclear if those will be jobs at the Tribeca office. “The bank, headquartered on Greenwich Street in Tribeca, employs roughly 10,000 workers in New York City. When asked if the cuts would disproportionately impact jobs in New York, the rep declined comment.”

Re: CITI Job Cuts
Its a re-org of the higher levels (e.g., too many middle/upper management types) in addition to reducing headcount overseas (Citi is one of the largest international banks out there and is unprofitable in many locations).
I’d expect a somewhat small chunk from NYC to be let go (~5-10%) but most layoffs will come from other locations.
BIG Congrats to Eulalie!! Can’t wait to try it and congratulate Tina & Chip in person.
