In the News: Inside a local architect’s loft

AN ARCHITECT’S OWN LOFT ON LISPENARD
The Journal features the family loft of architect Eran Chen of ODA, the firm that designed 15 Renwick, 5 Franklin Place, The James Hotel and tons of others. He and his wife paid $6 million for the 5000-square-foot space at 39 Lispenard in 2020 and put another $3 million into making what sounds like a dream home. From The Journal: “They could have moved right in. The 5,100-square-foot apartment, with four bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths, stretched a whole block south from busy Canal Street to quaint Lispenard Street, with rows of large windows at either end. Instead, Eran, 53, spent two years and about $3 million turning the loft into a home that felt right for him and Dafna, 47, and their three children, now 15, 16 and 17.”

REVIEWING THE OLD-IS-NEW DELMONICO’S
Eater’s critic Robert Sietsema made three trips to Delmonico’s, the restaurant on William and Beaver that opened in 1827, to assemble a recent review. He mentions the steak, the hamburger, the Baked Alaska, the chicken and had this bit of history: “We also tried lobster Newberg, which was known as lobster Wenberg when it appeared on the menu in 1876, named after wealthy sea captain, Ben Wenberg. Apparently, the name was changed to Newberg when Wenberg failed to pay his bill. The recipe was later published by Charles Ranhofer, who presided over the kitchen for 30 years, becoming the city’s first celebrity chef.”
