In the News: Best restaurants in Tribeca

BEST RESTAURANTS IN TRIBECA
Eater updated its Tribeca list this spring; don’t think I ever ran it. You can guess most. Some happy surprises: Square Diner; Mostrador at the Walker Hotel; Fresh Curry on Church between Duane and Reade; Nish Nush.

A NEW GALLERY AT 52 WALKER
amNY has a story on Storage, a new gallery on the fourth floor of 52 Walker from owner/director Onyedika Chuke, who did the renovation himself since he couldn’t get a loan. “The Nigerian-born artist began his career as an art dealer when he was still studying sculpture at Cooper Union, under the mentorship of Susan Sheehan.”

NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING PRODUCED HERE
Crain’s has an editorial with a sad fact: the city produced 14,227 new units of affordable housing last year overall, yet Community District 1 — us — produced none. (That’s the site of 5 World Trade Center above.) I understand the economics at work here, still, it seems with all the conversions there should be *something.* From Crain’s: “District 17, which covers South Bronx neighborhoods including Hunts Point, produced the most last year at 1,266, the report says, and District 21 in Queens, which includes Elmhurst, came in second with 1,031. On the other end of the spectrum, however, District 1, covering Lower Manhattan neighborhoods such as Tribeca and the Financial District, produced no affordable housing at all last year. Neither did District 5, which includes portions of Midtown East and the Upper East Side.”

FILM FESTIVAL DINNER AT THE ODEON
Just to connect the dots, albeit a month late, the film festival event at the Odeon last month — that caused it to be completely engulfed by a black tent — was the Chanel-sponsored Artists Dinner. Vogue has lots of photos from the inside. The event honors “the creatives who contribute original artwork as Tribeca Film Festival prizes each year,” if that helps. (It doesn’t help me!) The interior of the tent was covered in ivy and flowers as a photo backdrop. From Vogue: “Olivia Munn could be spotted at the bar with Rachel Antonoff and Hailey Benton Gates, while Mark Ronson got drinks for his wife, Grace Gummer, and her sister, Louisa Jacobson, nearby. Over steak frites, David Cross cracked jokes with Hannah Einbinder, as Blake Lively arrived in a pajama-like neoprene Chanel suit from the spring 2024 collection, featuring hand-drawn peonies that matched those on the table. ‘I may just go deep sea diving in it!’ She joked.”
