OYSTER NIGHTMARKET AT LITTLE ISLAND
A bit out of the neighborhood, but worth mentioning I thought: the New Amsterdam Market (not sure what that is but still…) will host an oyster nightmarket tonight through August 4 from 6:30 to 10p on Little Island, featuring oysters, foods from the sea, desserts, cocktails and other light fare prepared by chefs, cooks and purveyors who support regional, seasonal & sustainable food systems. It is open to the public at no charge; food and drink is for sale. Participants include Houseman and La Newyorkina.
THE SUN COMES OUT AT PS 234
The scaffolding is coming off of PS 234 over the next month, and work should be done there by the end of September, after several years. See the full schedule here. Thanks to A. for this nice shot.
WILDLIFE AT THE NATURE PLAYGROUND
In the don’t-see-this-everyday department, A. sent this shot of what he identified as a checkered garter snake on Pier 25, just south of the playground. Wikipedia says they are not venomous (well, at least not for humans) and can be kept as pets, which is perhaps how this guy ended up here. The species is endemic to the southwestern United States, Mexico and Central America. I hope he made it to some relative safety…
OK not venomous, still unpleasant to come upon in children’s park area. I hope someone caught it and put it off Manhattan. It does not belong here.
