The jails on White and Centre are just about gone

The city has successfully torn down two giant jails on White Street so they can build a more giant jail there and close a giant jail on Riker’s Island sometime soon.

It’s infuriating, depressing and makes you lose faith in government if you haven’t already, and it’s done. I’ve included an illustration from Neighbors United Below Canal just to remind you what was there originally.

The northern-most jail, The Tombs, is now gone — all that’s left is an empty lot with a pile of rubble. The southern building is down to about three stories from its original 19 or so.

The last I emailed with the city — a year ago August — there were no plans for the buildings yet. Awaiting word for an update…

The new jail is expected to be 295 feet tall max, with 1.25 million square feet, which is smaller than the original plan of 450 feet. And the whole thing — with borough-based jails in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx as well — will cost for starters $9 billion.
