Marian Goodman Gallery, the 57th Street stalwart that has taken the entire Grosvenor Building on Broadway and Walker, has completed its new space and will open to the public on Saturday. It is really spectacular. Even if you don’t love art, go for the exposed beams, the preserved arches and the Tribeca views. Plus, the sidewalk is liberated after five years.
The new space is 30,000 square feet — much larger than their former home — over five floors, three of which will be exhibit space. The top two floors are offices.
“To be in the heart of the Tribeca community is a very exciting moment and a new chapter in the gallery’s history,” said managing partner Rose Lord. “We love having a street-level presence for our galleries to allow the light of the city reflect on our artists.”
“Our mission has always been to create an international platform to for our artists,” she continued, “and it’s this commitment that prompted the partners to move downtown.”
The gallery was founded in 1977 and Goodman herself is still the founding partner and CEO. The opening show is a group exhibit titled Your Patience Is Appreciated, with artists represented from the gallery’s 47 years, and runs through Dec. 14.
“We wanted to look back to see the future of the gallery — it’s always good to look back to see where you’re going,” said president and partner Philipp Kaiser. “The gallery is a living organism.”
The building was scheduled pre-pandemic to be Highcourt, a private club. The gallery took the lease in February 2023, and the Tribeca design firm studioMDA, which has done the majority of galleries in the burgeoning Tribeca Gallery District, is renovating the space.
