(Art) Field Trip: Nick Cave in the Times Square subway station

I knew about the Nick Cave installation in the Times Square station — we have all seen them dozens of times since they were installed in 2022, since they stretch along the wall closest to the Shuttle platform, on your left as you are walking from the 1/2/3 platform. They are wonderful — meant to mimic Cave’s “Soundsuits,” the costumes he wears in his performance art, they look like fur from a distance until you get closer and see they are indeed mosaic glass. (The video below shows them in 3D.)

But in an especially long wait for a shuttle recently I spied some down an obscure corridor going towards Sixth Avenue (I could have sworn that was east, but clearly not…).

The day I was there, two of the steel doors were open, but had they not been, there’s no way you would see this series of murals, also installed in 2022. And if you keep going, to the 42nd Street—Bryant Park/Fifth Avenue Station for the B, D, F and M, you will be treated to even more.

Cave’s work is also in a show now at the Jack Shainman Gallery on Lafayette.
