Field Trip: A dumpling tour of Chinatown

I had my 14-year-old nephew in town for a weekend and came up with some great activities for a kid who loves cars (New York Auto Show at the Javitz), books (“The Outsiders,” but on Broadway) and food. For the last, we did a dumpling tour of Chinatown, based on a suggestion from J., who made it an Easter Sunday tradition for her family of five.

It was so fun. I ate one dumpling per stop, and that’s the tech. I think my nephew ate about 40 in total, but teenage boys can do that sort of thing. We of course left room for Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, which I cannot walk by without a scoop of almond cookie. It is the best flavor ever.

I will note that Eater has its own guide for Chinatown dumplings, and The Infatuation has one for the whole city; I stuck with J.’s list since otherwise, where do you stop?? Also we ate on the go — no sit-down spots for us. And I added in Fried Dumplings as a finale, because that is a family favorite. The final analysis: Super Taste for the win. I am going back for their specialty — Lanzhou-style hand-pulled-noodles.

NB: This is not the tour for you if you’ve become a freaker about plastic waste as I have.

Also, this is listed for walking south to north, starting at Columbus Park, though we doubled back and did Fried Dumplings as a post-ice cream bonus:

Tasty Dumpling
Mulberry & Mosco
These guys have super fast service with indoor seats and dumplings served on a paper plate
$4 for eight

Deluxe Green Bo
Bayard & Mott
The place was PACKED. You can skip the line if you are ordering to go. These came steamed and were fresh and full. A fave with the women.
$9 for eight

Super Taste
Eldridge & Canal
There was a long line on a Saturday afternoon for takeout but sooo worth it. Crispy, thin-skinned with big pieces of chive.
$6.50 for 10

Shu Jiao Fu Zhou
Grand & Eldridge (north of Canal)
A much thicker-skinned, meatier dumpling, and greasy. Not the best ration of dough to filling, IMO. But what a deal.
$5 for 15

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory
Don’t be deterred by the line. It moves quickly. As mentioned above, I am almond cookie every time, but worth also trying coconut fudge or banana, if it is on the menu.
$8 for a scoop

Fried Dumplings
106 Mosco Street
We called this the work horse. Definitely ask for the black vinegar.
$10 for a million.
