Wo Hop in Chinatown expands after nearly 90 years

Yes, a bit far afield, but is there anyone among us who has *not* been to Wo Hop? Dating myself but who cares: Wo Hop was my regular stop as a suburban kid in the ’80s, after a visit to Unique Boutique.

The restaurant, which has always been down a steep flight of concrete stairs at 17 Mott, just east of the corner with Mosco, has taken the space upstairs. I love these images by Ines Leong — they are like Chinatown Hoppers. The space is new but not unfamiliar. The menu is the same.

I first saw the news in Eater. The restaurant, which was founded in 1938, is in its third generation of ownership. The new space is a collaboration with David Leung, the third-generation owner of Wo Hop, Eater said, and T.K. Justin Ng, an architect who also designed Welcome to Chinatown’s office hub.

  1. This was also a mainstay for me in 80s going in from Long Island, late night after concerts usually. Have moved on to other fare but will always remember.
Also, they have had a restaurant with same name upstairs for a while, remember going to lunch there with people from work 20 years ago. May have been 19 Mott.

  2. ???
Wo Hop has had the upstairs location for many, many decades.

  3. Omg, Unique Clothing Warehouse!!!… and the denim brands that they sold…Sassoon, Gloria Vanderbilt, Jordache, Calvin Klein! Wow, it really takes me back. Remember also…Reminisce, Canal Jeans, Parachute, Antique Boutique,
