Seen & Heard: A GoFundMe for Duane Park Patisserie

GOFUNDME FOR MADELINE LANCIANI
A longtime friend and supporter of Duane Park Patisserie has started a GoFundMe account to help Madeline Lanciani with legal fees. “As rents continue to rise and independent businesses struggle to compete, New York City — and Tribeca in particular –is losing many of the small, owner-operated establishments that helped make these neighborhoods what they are,” Emily Kabalkin wrote. “All funds raised will go directly to Madeline through Duane Park Patisserie’s business bank account and will help cover the substantial legal expenses associated with that effort.”

FIRST MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING
The Tribeca Alliance Merchants Association, which is going by TAMA, will host its inaugural annual meeting on Thursday, June 11, at 6p, at the Citi branch at 388 Greenwich. Chris Marte will be the evening’s speaker. The meeting will include electing the board of directors and organization updates. Voting is limited to members whose dues are paid and current as of Friday, June 5, but the public is welcome. The organization is also seeking people interested in serving on the board of directors. See more information here.

AUSSIE BBQ MUSIC FESTIVAL
Sounds Australia will host the Aussie BBQ NYC Music Festival (isn’t that called a barbie?) on Saturday, June 13, from 3 to 10p at The Seaport. The free event aims to bring emerging and acclaimed Australian artists directly to New York audiences. And in a funny World Cup twist, Kings Domain Melbourne will have a tent where people can line up for one of the five “World Cut” hairstyles inspired by global soccer stars. More info here.

TRIBECA PARK CAFE ON SPOTIFY
A NYC musician named Angel #9 has a song on Spotify — “Golden Curls” — and it features the Tribeca Park Cafe on its cover art. Not sure of the origin story there… They also have a song titled “Beach Street.”

  1. What kind of legal issues did Duane Park Patisserie have when trying to stay open?

  2. From an earlier posting on TC:

They have been in court since last November for many month’s back rent; in April the judge granted the landlord the termination of the lease and last week Madeline received an eviction notice. She has until June 30 to fully vacate. The landlord is also suing her personally in a civil suit — with luck, she said, her lawyer will get them to drop that since a successful case there would bankrupt her.

The GoFundMe would likely cover any outstanding legal fees owed to her attorney as well as any legal fees needed to represent her personally in a civil suit. Considering how much she’s spent on generously handing out bakery treats to hundreds of kids on Halloween (not to mention her other delicious donations to the community over the decades – like Dinner on Duane), this would be an opportunity to show her some support.
