Car careens down Hubert sidewalk, ending in wild crash

A Jeep SUV barreled down the sidewalk of Hubert around 8a on Saturday, taking out all in its path until it rammed into a parked car just east of Greenwich, pushing that vehicle onto the roof of the car in front of it. It all took an instant. Thanks to A. and S. for these shots, including one still shot taken from S.’s building’s security camera.

Somehow, there were no injuries — including the driver, seen below sitting on the curb before police arrived.

“Moments before my son and I stepped outside to go to the coffee shop, we heard a loud ‘crunch,'” S. said. “My son said ‘apa let’s go see the trash truck quick while it’s crunching trash.’ I thought to myself, that was awfully loud but maybe it was some construction material. No. It was someone ripping down the sidewalk on Hubert Street.”

“Many of us walk looking down at our phones or on headphones,” S. said. “So perhaps I will stop that habit.”

He also noted that Hubert was closed by the Department of Transportation during rush hour so cars cannot use it as a shortcut to the tunnel. That’s when, S. said, there was often a 50mph sprint to catch the light on Hudson.

  1. This driver, and any others that engage in reckless driving on our neighborhood streets, ought to face prison time.

Speeding and driving like a maniac, in particular on residential streets often full of pedestrians (including many children and strollers on that block), is no different than walking around recklessly waving a loaded gun; eventually someone will get hurt or worse.

    • Would be great to know what happened to the driver. I heard they just let him go.

On March 13th a pedestrian walking in the crosswalk at Hudson and Vestry was hit by a driver who literally drove through the lane delineators.

There are sadly multiple examples of reckless driving in our neighborhood connected to the Holland Tunnel and the very little traffic enforcement that happens in the area. It’s only a matter of time before someone is killed given present conditions.

The reality is our neighbors is viewed by many as a highway on/off ramp to the Holland Tunnel and the city needs to really redesign the roadway and traffic patterns around the tunnel. The lack of urgency to do anything is extremely frustrating. The neighborhood also needs more red light cameras and block the box enforcement so drivers learn to slowdown and obey traffic laws in this neighborhood.

  2. They should install speed bumps every 40 feet on Hubert Street.

  3. That car has had 4 moving violations in the last month alone. It’s also registered in Georgia but every violation has happened in Queens it Brooklyn. The good news is it looks like he just registered it recently so he wrecked his new car. But he’s also likely committing insurance fraud. These type of drivers are a menace and should never be allowed to have a license again.

  4. My wife was recently hit by a car. Thankfully she survived. The Driver made a left turn and just ran into her as she crossed with the walk sign. We hear about car violence daily in one of the most pedestrian “friendly” cities in the world. Driving in Manhattan should be limited to taxis, buses, senior and handicap assist. This driver in the article could have killed mult people including kids, pets etc. NYPD doesnt really do anything unless a) the driver was seen by NYPD breaking the law or b) its a hit and run. Even when a person is hit and seriously injured. There is something out of balance about that.

  5. I witness so many drivers illegally turning west (!) on Jay st trying to get out of Hudson st traffic. So incredibly dangerous. It’s only a matter of time before something awful happens.

  6. Shameful. Jail time? Losing his license at least? Doubtful. Probably no penalty at all.

  7. speed bumps on Hubert and Laight would do wonders.

  8. Last week I walked from Canal to Harrison with my 6 year old: we were almost run over SIX times: three cars at the corner of Washington and Canal that blatantly ran a red light as we were mid-cross (one of them having the nerve to wave at us as we were forced to wait in the middle of traffic). At Vestry, an older driver rolled right through a stop sign toward us, causing me to yell – she finally lifted her eyes from the phone she was texting on and then trying to carry on through us. And finally a driver who turned on a red and had the nerve to curse at me, swinging around the corner inches from the curb. All had NJ plates are were clearly gunning for the tunnel at rush hour.

I lived in Tribeca for 30 years and often watched the long line of cars snake down Hudson on a Friday afternoon, but they’re getting more aggressive and scary, especially since so many of the them are XL SUVs now.

    • The cost of Congestion Pricing should be raised and that would keep some of these terrible NJ drivers at home. I have had many of those same experiences, especially closer to Canal.
