Photographer Sardi Klein has lived and worked in Tribeca since 1980, and just a sampling of some of those images taken over the decades are now on display at the Western Union building on the West Broadway side.
The native New Yorker — born and raised — discovered photography as a high school student and began photographing the city in black-and-white film in the 1970s, “capturing the character and diversity of the city I love,” she said.
After graduating from the School of Visual Arts, she worked as a freelance photographer, photographing events, editorial assignments and portraits. Her work has been in many publications including New York Magazine and other publications, and is in the collections of the New-York Historical Society and the New York Public Library.
Her teaching career began when she was invited to teach basic photography to women inmates at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. That experience led to a 45-year career teaching photography at the School of Visual Arts, Cooper Union and Pratt Institute.
