“Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys,” sang Willie Nelson, but what about cowgirls? Kinda beats princesses, if you ask me. To that end, Western Spirit has adorable pink-trimmed cowboy hats ($15) and sparkly chaps ($48). • 395 Broadway (at Walker), 212-343-1476, westernspiritny.com.
Years ago, I bought a plump ceramic piggy bank from World Journal Bookstore, and it gives me a giggle every time I deposit change in it. The store doesn’t have that model anymore, but check this one out—that’s one tickled pig! It’s about the size of an super-large potato ($15). I was also intrigued by a spherical gold container ($11), and this insane statuette—about a foot tall, it’s far and away the kitschiest item in the neighborhood ($41 but on sale for 40 percent off). The store also has pretty paper and smart red envelopes that would dress up any gift card. • 379 Broadway (at White), 212-226-5131.
When I told the Pearl Paint clerk that I only needed to photograph this tote bag but since it was all of $1.50 I figured that I might as well buy it, she said, “You could give it to a homegirl,” which left me mulling (a) if I knew any homegirls, and (b) if a homegirl would actually want it. Then again, maybe I’ll keep it. Given that many of the store’s shelves are empty, the bag could end up being a collector’s item. • 308 Canal (Broadway/Church), 212-431-7932, pearlpaint.com.
Because of Tribeca Citizen I’ve walked into so many places that I had never had reason to before. Take Y.H.K. Department Store, which is considerably fancier than I expected it to be, given the unassuming awning and the location on Jay Street. It feels like a high-end duty-free shop, with top-shelf leather goods, cosmetics, and more. The proprietor, Eric, told me that Y.H.K. has been there for 25 years—and all I can say is that if Dunhill starts making a pug money clip to go along with this bulldog one ($205), I’ll so be back. (P.S. The photo is so much better than the others because it’s courtesy of Dunhill.com.) • 11 Jay (Hudson/Greenwich), 212-226-1300.
Similarly, I don’t quite hit the target demo of PB & Caviar—which sells women’s and kids’ clothing, beauty products, and toys—so I had no idea the shop had delightful merchandise like these dragon (?) socks, delicious-smelling Côté Bastide potpourri ($58), sequined coin purses ($24), a fantastic hippopotamus ($380), and some Wry Baby infants’ shirts ($24) that I wish I had bought for pretty much every new parent I know, with phrases such as “Photo with baby 25¢,” “I might barf,” and “Someday I’ll have a hairy chest.” • 88 Thomas (W.
