What’s Up This Week

Here are just a few of the highlights on tap this week. More info on these—and the full slate—is in the Tribeca calendar of events.

Monday
Canal Park Playhouse’s “art variety” show, “The Chapel Series”: “This non religious show will create an environment where the audience feels the power of the collective and of the creative individual– a space to collaborate, to share, to expose, to inspire and to entertain.” ••• The Brother from Another Planet screens at the Elevated Acre as part of the River to River Festival. ••• Bad Fever at 92YTribeca. ••• Aaron Neville at City Winery.

Tuesday
Sam Hoffman of OldJewsTellingJokes.com is at 92YTribeca. ••• Third Rail Projects’ “Looking Glass,” part of the R2R Festival: “A site-adaptive, immersive performance experience utilizing and highlighting pre-existing architecture. The work invites audiences to see the surroundings anew by charting their own path through a cutting edge, fierce, and sophisticated re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland & Through The Looking Glass. The work is a durational performance, presented on a loop for roughly one hour.” (Also Wednesday and Thursday.) ••• Summer Lovers (that’s Peter Gallagher, above) and Summer School at 92YTribeca.

Wednesday
Free tennis clinic at Washington Mark Park; sign-up required. ••• Woody Allen’s Zelig is at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. ••• The R2R Festival hosts a celebration of Jonathan Schwartz, “keeper of the flame of American Popular Song.” (Whenever I hear him I want to hand him a double espresso.) ••• Two films about Sherlock Holmes at 92YTribeca: They Might Be Giants and The Seven Per-Cent Solution. ••• A capella group the Persuasions perform, along with a screening of a documentary about them, What Is a Heart?, at 92YTribeca.

Thursday
Get your pétanque on at Cercle Rouge’s big Bastille Day party. ••• R2R Festival: “MacArthur laureate Michael Moschen is considered to be the supreme juggling virtuoso of our time.” (Also Friday and Saturday.) ••• R2R Festival: “Inspired by the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas, Human Fountain involves performers leaping from as high as 30 feet from a three-story, open, honeycomb structure in order to create cascades of airborne liquid muscle.” (Also Friday and Saturday.) “Liquid muscle” sounds like something Lance Armstrong would deny injecting. ••• R2R Festival: Australia’s Strange Fruit, a dance troupe. (Also Friday and Saturday.) ••• Friends of Duane Park throws a swing-dance party. ••• Miranda July’s new film, The Future, is at 92YTribeca. ••• Patti Smith plays Castle Clinton for the R2R Festival. I like Patti Smith—if there’s a karaoke bar that has her “Gloria” on it, I’ll meet you there—but as I read Just Kids, I kept wondering whether people would have kvelled over that book if she and Mapplethorpe hadn’t been famous. ••• Brady Rymer and the Little Band that Could play for the kids at Washington Market Park. ••• The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes at 92YTribeca. ••• Marc Cohn plays City Winery. His recent cover of “Tears of a Clown” was really lovely.

Friday
Concert at the South Street Seaport for R2R: “With hushed vocals and dreamy melodies, enigmatic Swedes The Radio Dept. have been bewitching listeners for nearly ten years—never more so than on last year’s Clinging to a Scheme, one of 2010’s most heralded discs. Dreampop duo Asobi Seksu are sometimes jangly, sometimes ethereal, and sometimes very noisy. Sometimes all at the same time.”

Saturday
Free boot camp at Bogardus Plaza. ••• Field Day on Governor’s Island, part of R2R: ‘A day of new and exciting outdoor games, from wild new field sports to large social games. Each year Come Out & Play features the best in experimental new real-world games. This year we bring the fun to Governor’s Island.” ••• Comedy flash mob for R2R: “The MP3 Experiment is a participatory public event created by New York comedy group Improv Everywhere. Participants download an MP3 file, head out to the same public location, and press play simultaneously. Hilarity ensues as participants carry out ridiculous, coordinated instructions to the bewilderment of everyone else.” ••• The Del McCoury Band play bluegrass at City Winery.

Sunday
Fulton Stall Market and New Amsterdam Market. ••• Wet Hot American Summer at Tribeca Grand, followed by “True Blood.”
