••• From a reader: “Have you noticed the annoying surge in car traffic throughout lower Tribeca as a result of the Occupy protests? They basically have crippled traffic on Broadway: Cars heading south rubberneck as they pass Zuccotti Park causing Broadway to forever be backed up. Streets heading east towards Broadway (such as Warren) are then backed up, since traffic basically doesn’t move. Its quite a headache. To make matters worse, with all the police streaming in and out of the protest area, there’s a constant symphony of loud police sirens trying to navigate through the traffic. Its worse than ever. I’m on Murray. This general area used to be busy during the day (now even busier with the new Goldman Sachs building), quieter at night , and pretty calm on the weekends. Now, it’s a madhouse all the time. Adding to the pedestrian traffic is the 9/11 Memorial. Waves of visitors always making their way down Church and W. Broadway.” Anyone have any thoughts on the topic? I pointed out that the Chambers Street construction is a huge factor in the Warren/Murray congestion (and Broadway being squeezed down to two lanes at Duane can’t help).
