Based on the idea that it’s great photographers who make exceptional photography, and not their equipment, Soho Photo‘s Krappy Kamera show has been an annual event since 1992, after a bunch of photographers were chatting about how “they preferred using their junky cameras to their high-end ones” and photographer Sandra Carrion suggested mounting an exhibit on the theme. In 1997, Carrion and another photographer, Mary Ann Lynch, started the National Krappy Kamera Competition. This year, the contest received about 1,000 entries—from 185 photographers from eight countries—and Swann Auction Galleries‘ Daile Kaplan chose the ones she thought were the koolest (once you see the photos it’s hard to think of them as krap; the grand prize winner, above, was taken with an iPhone). Every entry is featured in a giant “kollage” upstairs, while downstairs is devoted to the krappy work by 17 members of Soho Photo. The show opens Tuesday, Mar. 2, with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and runs through Apr. 3.
