The Drama League Is Moving Here

The Drama League is doubling its space by moving to 32 Sixth Ave.—to the northeast corner of the building, at Church and Lispenard, to be exact. The debut of the Drama League Theater Center should be near the end of the year; executive director Gabriel Shanks said I should pester him mid-August for a rendering of the 3,400-square-foot space.

From the New York Times: “The new space will allow the league to beef up existing programs, like its long-established program for young directors, as well as expand into new undertakings. ‘Our current programing is going to grow five or six fold because we have the space, the ability, to do so,’ Mr. Shanks said. As examples of activities likely to benefit from the move, he mentioned artist residencies, play readings, workshops, open rehearsals and all sorts of classes, seminars and conferences. ‘In 2013, we’re going to be launching an educational curriculum, something we’ve never really been able to do before,’ he said. Plans call for the Drama League Theater Center to include a laboratory and development space in which theater artists will be able to create and polish work for presentation elsewhere. The Tribeca location […] will also encourage interaction with theater companies and other arts groups in that neighborhood.”

And two notes from the press release: “FXFowle, the architects behind Lincoln Center’s new North Plaza and Alice Tully Hall, are the designers of The Drama League Theater Center.” And “The construction of the project is being funded by generous contributions from private and public foundations, individual donors, and Drama League members.
