I’ve been keeping an eye on the storefront at 142 Duane for a while, figuring the paper in the windows and the light often being on meant something was coming there. But the other day the interior door was open, and I saw a huge painting-in-progress. It was pixelated, like a newsprint photo blown way up. Anyone know who’s working in there? And whether it’s a temporary atelier or a permanent one?

In the big building at the southwest corner of Hudson and Canal (205 Hudson), the southeastern part will be American Flatbread. But anyone know what’s happening over on the Watts Street side?

UPDATE: Thanks to a comment from Anonymous, we now know…. Here’s what he said: “According to DOB filings it appears that the Watts portion of 205 Hudson’s ground floor (and floors 2 -4) will be an art school for Hunter College. From the minutes of the Hunter College Senate on March 14, 2012: The President of Hunter said: ‘…the MFA Program has its new space. We are hoping to move in January 2013. It’s 205 Hudson Street and we are getting three floors. There are big open beautiful loft floors that the faculty will be able to design as smaller studios, open studios, areas for student exhibitions, and places for ceramics. This will give us a way to grow into a 21st century Art School. There will be about 90,000 sq. feet on three floors. We have our own elevator which is very good. Have these tree images always been in the southern windows of 200 Hudson? I asked the doorman, but he didn’t seem to know they were there at all. Is something happening behind there?

UPDATE: A reader reminds me that Havas is taking over much of 200 Hudson (and 205 Hudson across the street), which could be impacting the space. I ran my (heretofore unspoken) theory by him/her that jewelry company David Yurman could be doing something to the space, since its headquarters abuts it and black-and-white photography is a Yurman motif. He/she said that a neighbor confirmed that it’s Yurman’s space, although it seems possible that Yurman could be subleasing it out. Hudson and Desbrosses isn’t exactly prime retail territory.
