In the News: Big West Street Development

••• This will sound very familiar to those of us who signed up for Asphalt Green more than a year ago: “In order to salvage even half season—and get most of the 1,100 Downtown Little Leaguers up to bat—play would have to start on May 1, two months late, says League President Bill Martino. It is unknown whether that is possible, Martino said, and a lack of communication from the Battery Park City Authority—including unanswered calls and emails—is heightening the sense of concern and frustration among league officials and parents.” —Tribeca Trib

550 washington courtesy google maps••• That huge building at Houston and West—the one Houston runs through—is finally in play. “Real estate tycoon Eugene Grant has sold his controlling stake in the behemoth St. John’s Terminal Building [550 Washington] in SoHo for roughly $250 million [….] The property […] sprawls more than three city blocks and stretches more than 800 feet along the West Side Highway. Its 1.3 million square feet are spread between just four floors, which, at 250,000 square feet, are Manhattan’s largest [….] There are also 290,000 square feet of air rights on the property.” —Commercial Observer (photo courtesy Google Maps)

••• “The elite Italian automaker Maserati is adding some va-va-voom to Hell’s Kitchen with a 25,000-square-foot store on the ground floor of 619 West 54th Street. […] Unlike the showroom at 1 York Street in Tribeca, this location will feature the luxury automaker’s first New York City service center.” —Commercial Observer

••• “The force behind [food-swapping service] Mealku is Ted D’Cruz-Young, a Scotsman and former BBDO creative director who’s been funding the free service with investor backing and his own cash. A Tribeca father of two, he’s the sort of high-level thinker who pauses mid-sentence to parse definitions and can deliver a layered, nuanced response to the most straightforward question. For Mr. D’Cruz-Young, Mealku isn’t just a biz startup; it’s a cure for a ‘dysfunctional’ and wasteful system that doesn’t feed us right. He’s an economics major turned ad man turned food Marxist.” —Wall Street Journal
