••• On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Friends of Greenwich Street will have its Spring Celebration—with cupcakes, balloons, and flower plantings—and the planters around Harrison Street will be named Capozzoli Garden in honor of longtime volunteers Ron and JoAnn Capozzoli. Councilmember Margaret Chin wouldn’t miss it for the world. Raindate: Sunday.
••• Bit’z Kids, a children’s boutique on the Upper West Side, is opening a branch at 275 Greenwich, between Warren and Murray (more specifically, between Murray Cleaners and Kaffe 1668). The debut is slated for July, but it could be sooner. Here are excerpts from Bit’z Kids’ “About Us” website page: “F.O. International was founded in Kobe, Japan, in 1988. In just 11 years, we have become the largest children’s clothing maker in Japan, with 125 stores nationwide. In addition to our Japanese presence, we operate 35 stores in China and maintain a robust wholesale business with over 750 customers. […] We opened our first NY store, Bit’z Kids, in 2008 […]. We also promote family-style fashion with our cute, funky, household items such as tableware. […] Currently, there are four lines that are featured on bitzkids.com (and in our Manhattan store); each is totally different in style. Bit’z is a line for boys and girls which features vivid colors and unique designs. F.O. Kids features a unisex American Casual look which borrows ideas from vintage fashion. Seraph is a delicate line for girls which focuses on earth tone colors and simplistic patterns. Finally, Boomy Roomy is for active girls, incorporating colorful and unique patchworks into their wardrobe.”
••• Mysterious Bookshop is publishing two limited-edition anthologies, highly giftable versions of books that are also being published in commercial editions. The first, The Dark End of the Street: New Stories of Sex & Crime, edited by Jonathan Santlofer and S.J. Rozan, has just been published by Bloomsbury as a paperback original. Contributing authors include Lee Child, Amy Hempel, Madison Smartt Bell, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen L. Carter, and Edmund White. “The Mysterious Bookshop is publishing a hardcover limited edition signed by all contributors and editors (which has an official pub date of today),” emailed manager Ian Kern. “All the stories are new and not published elsewhere. Our edition has a leather binding and marbled boards.” Only 250 copies have been published, and they’re $250 $150 [oops]. The second book, Stories, edited by edited by Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio, is comprised of original fiction by Roddy Doyle, Jodi Picoult, Chuck Palahniuk, Walter Mosley and others—including Joyce Carol Oates, natch. It will be published in hardcover by William Morrow on June 15. Mysterious Bookshop’s edition, signed by all but a few of the authors, will come out around the same time, for the same price. (I was imaging what a pain it would be to send the books around to all of the authors when Ian kindly explained that they simply sign pages that get bound in.)
••• Have lunch at Estancia 460 on Monday (May 10) between noon and 2 p.m. and you’ll get a free latte or cappuccino.
••• Clio, the tableware shop on Thompson Street in Soho, is having a huge sale May 14–31: “Everything in the store—plates, bowls, glasses, vases, candleholders, lamps, serving pieces and more—is all discounted from 10-75% off. Even Clio’s furniture—both rustic American antiques (farm tables, hutches and benches) and mid-century and modern pieces (side boards and tables)—will be offered at a steep discount.”
