The ice rink on the plaza outside the Brookfield Place (née World Financial Center) Winter Garden opens today. The outgoing message on the phone number (646-656-1384) says it’s already open, so I went over, thinking I’d show off my moves. Alas, the rink wasn’t quite ready yet; the nice guy—whose name, if I heard correctly, is Gftkjft—working there said it’ll almost definitely be open by 12:30 p.m.
The setting is terrific, as you can imagine. The rink is open daily, with sessions from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m, noon to 1:30 p.m., 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The price is $15, with skate rentals an additional $5. There’s no mention of a cheaper rate for kids, which is sort of surprising.
Note: Gftkjft said no devices would be allowed out on the ice. It’s possible he only meant cameras, but be prepared in case it includes phones.
I went by about 11:30 and he said it would be open “later.” I said “2 or 3?” but he wouldn’t commit. The important thing is to get there before the kids get out of school. The ice looks good.
I’m guessing (just guessing) that by devices they mean they don’t want people skating with headphones on. I can see how that would be courting danger.
I’m guessing they don’t want people skating and texting. Walking and texting is bad enough.
or shooting.
I skated for awhile this afternoon. There was one other person on the ice. The sign sez no phones, cameras, iPods, headphones. Don’t know if that means you just have to keep them out of sight. The skates for the way little kids aren’t in yet. The weather was perfect.
hockey sticks and pucks, maybe? sounds like Gftkjft may have taken one too many in the toofas.
