In the News: School Exam Protests

Sadie at PS 234••• “Lower Manhattan principals, teachers, parents and children were among 32 Manhattan school communities that gathered before the start of classes on Friday, April 11 to protest the recently administered state English exams.” (Note: As you may have noticed, I don’t generally cover citywide school news, because I figure parents are likely to get it elsewhere. But one parent sent the above photo of a fourth grader at P.S. 234 named Sadie, and it seemed a shame not to run it.) —Tribeca Trib

••• From a New York Times article about how state legislators often have other jobs, posing a rather obvious potential for conflict of interest: “Assembly speaker, Sheldon Silver, a Manhattan Democrat, works for a personal injury law firm, Weitz & Luxenberg, and reported earning $350,000 to $450,000 in 2012.” That’s quite an estimate.

••• “A cellular tower rising on the roof of a building at Albany Street and South End Avenue has [a resident] up in arms.” —Broadsheet
