••• “Urban Archaeology, a chain of stores founded in the 1970s specializing in vintage building parts and new fixtures, is exiting the antiques business to focus on reproductions. In late March, Guernsey’s auction house will offer thousands of pieces of architectural salvage (with estimates up to six figures each) in a sale at Urban Archaeology’s Tribeca flagship on Franklin Street.” I’ll see if I can find out more about the auction. The Guernseys site says “mid-March,” and it includes a pic of the mermaid that’s out on the loading dock. —New York Times UPDATE: From the Guernsey’s press release: “The Urban Archaeology Unreserved Auction will begin at 1 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 live at Urban Archaeology, 143 Franklin Street. ••• “A local leader who has lent a sympathetic ear to South Street Seaport preservationists fighting the proposed development project there, has just been tapped to join the city Landmarks Preservation Commission—the same commission which is about to begin reviewing the proposal. Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday nominated Wellington Chen, executive director of the Chinatown Partnership Local Development Corp., to the 11-seat commission.” —Downtown Express
