At last night’s meeting of the Community Board 1 Tribeca Committee—the full Unofficial Minutes are forthcoming, once I’ve fully recovered—the Parks Department unveiled a rendering of Nicholas Holiber’s “Head of Goliath,” to be displayed in Tribeca Park from May to July. (The teddy bear will be removed in April.) From the background materials:
••• It’s 6 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet.
••• It’s made from wood, polymer gypsum/fiberglass, found objects, recycled supplies, organic material, plastic, acrylic materials, and various types of paint.
••• It was created for the site, and “Holiber has received a residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council to work on this project.”
And here’s a study of the work, from Holiber’s Instagram page.
P.S. The Park Department rep said there’s an informal “friends” group being formed for Tribeca Park—can’t recall if we knew that.
Gorgeous. Absolutely stunning.
Oh yes, there is a Friends of Tribeca Park group. We can always be reached at: friendsoftribecapark@gmail.com. Our small but growing group has been looking after Tribeca Park for 5 years. We look after the day to day maintenance that the Parks Department simply does not have the time or funds to do. Recently we had a major new planting in T.P. which will make a noticeable difference come Spring. We also just received a grant from Partnership for Parks for storage and signage upgrades. We will be geared up and ready to go when Spring comes (which on a day like today is sort of hard to imagine). Always looking for Saturday morning gardeners. Contact us!
Yuck!! The Teddy Bear was urban cool.
This head isn’t.
Back to the drawing board please!
