Seen & Heard: Hopes Languish for Fairway Market

••• Because everyone always asks whether Fairway Market is still on for 255 Greenwich (at Murray), especially since the October report that the company was looking to pull out, I tried asking Fairway (no response), its PR reps (no response), and landlord Jack Resnick & Sons (“We have no comment at this time on this matter”). Although it ain’t over till it’s over, I think we have to assume it’s not happening.

255 Greenwich••• After commenter James posted the DOB paperwork for the conversion of 396 Broadway (southeast corner of Broadway, and a beaut), I hoped he’d clarify what they mean. From what I can tell, the building is being converted into condos and a hotel, but instead of the condos being on the upper floors, the building appears to be getting split into eastern and western halves. If there’s some other way to read it—I’ve included it below—please let me know!

396 Broadway396 broadway schedule A detail••• TKM commented that while L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon is indeed on the second floor of Brookfield Place, above P.J. Clarke’s, it “will have a casual coffee and bake shop scheduled for ground level beyond P.J. Clarke’s on the corner with a few cafe tables outside for seating.”

••• Colonnade Group tweeted that it’s finally going to get started on 403 Greenwich, the empty lot next to Kaffe 1668 North. The rendering I have for it (below) has been around for a while, but I don’t think the design has changed. UPDATE: It is indeed the current design.

403greenwich courtesy Admji and Andreoli••• I still think 56 Leonard is going to end up 85% disappointing, but I have to admit this photo is striking (the construction netting gives the Jenga flavor that we all thought we were getting more of). It’s by Jesse DeStasio.

  1. Trader Joe’s or Key Food should move into 255 Greenwich Street.

Key Food would be smart to move in there because they’d get double action on each side of town considering they have a location on Fulton Street a block down from the South Street Seaport which is bigger, cleaner, nicer, and cheaper than Food Emporium.

  2. Still can’t understand why a supermarket chain isn’t sniffing around the J&R space – amazing location for lunch-walk-ins by Pace kids or tourists catching buses across park row; increasing residential and hotel construction all around, and an alleyway btwn Anne & Beekman for deliveries in the back. Could the price be too high, even for them?

  3. I’d like a Murray’s Cheese Shop like the one on Bleecker — with gourmet grocery items and prepared foods. And cheese!
