After 25 years working in financial services, Lower Manhattan resident Albert Eshoo decided to launch a new career: providing support to families who need help caring for their loved ones. “My aunt and uncle in Westchester are now in their 80s,” says Albert. “My aunt is in the beginning stages of dementia, and my uncle has limited mobility due to hip surgery. My sister and I are their main support system, and helping them has been an eye-opening and educational experience. We’ve seen firsthand how important it is for people to stay in their homes as long as possible.”

Albert and his wife, Joyce Barocas—that’s them pictured above—have opened a Right at Home office in Lower Manhattan. Right at Home is a nationwide company that provides in-home care, whether a family member needs a little extra help around the house, assistance recovering from a hospital stay, or someone to check in on them throughout the week.

The Right at Home of Lower Manhattan branch serves Manhattan primarily below 34th Street. “I’ve loved Manhattan since I was just a kid,” says Albert (with a client, above right). “It’s tremendously rewarding to help people stay here and take advantage of all that it has to offer for as long as they can. Our clients want to remain in the city where their friends, passions, and favorite activities are.”

Right at Home works hard to match the right caregiver to the right client. “Our caregivers are a wide spectrum of ages, with different interests and backgrounds. Most of them are retired or have their own business, so the flexibility of being a companion to a senior really appeals to them.” Take Babbie Jacobs (left), who has been the owner of a wilderness mountaineering guide service in Alaska and a community development activist. Currently residing in New York, she works with a charity organization in marketing and development for nonprofits focused on social justice and community outreach. And she helps Right at Home clients live the best life possible: “The opportunity to connect with and support individuals who are often frail and vulnerable while bringing comfort to their family members is what makes this work rewarding,” she says.
