  • Is Tribeca supposed to be some historic region? It was mostly built in the 20th century and was a slum until the real estate boom in the 90's. — Jen on Another Ride Through the Past

  • The elevator in my building on Beach Street was a freight elevator that could probably fit a car in it. My building was once a furniture warehouse & the elevator was a 3 sided cage with the front open & a cable which we pulled up to go down & down to go up. It was always a challenge to stop it exactly on your floor, sometimes it was a few inches above your floor & then you would try to get it level & would land a few inches below your floor. There were 2 huge metal doors that you opened by pulling on a rod. When my kids were babies I would wheel the crib into the elevator & take it up to my neighbor who would babysit so we could have a night out. My building went condo 7 years ago & a small passenger elevator was installed with buttons & a fob to unlock it on your floor. — Rosalie Acinapura on The Ups and Downs of Old Tribeca

  • Walked over to the pier with my pup around 11pm Saturday and there was a lot of activity and bright lights. Bittersweet all in all. The pieces going down Greenwich Street were also rather breathe taking. Some of the finishing touches on the outer part of Tower 1 - quite a feat. Very sad too. The largest pieces that could not be sent by truck were brought down the Hudson from Quebec. — Lisa on Seen & Heard: Sake Bar Report

  • I think the growth in the tree in front of 157 Hudson tells it all. And in the first photo it looks like it has just been knocked a bit in spite of its' protection, maybe by a truck backing up, and years later, it is still leaning. — Robert Ripps on Tribeca Then and Now #4

  • I can vouch for Jeff Galloway's intentions and those of the CB1 as a decades long investor in the BPC community. My family and I have live in the area since its inception. There is a person on this thread who uses his website and antagonistic views to INCITE conflict. Ironically, this person is a renter of a modest 1 bedroom apartment and has only lived in the area 8 years. I am not clear as to how this person has such a vested interest in the BPC community? I think his vested interest is in creating conflict since he spends his days video-taping livery car drivers/food delivery people and terrorizing his own doormen. Efforts he views as noble and the rest of us view as NUTS. Thank you to Jeff Galloway and the CB1 for their tireless work in bettering the quality of life for Battery Park City residents. — Marcus Solomon on In the News: Community Board 1 Is Blocking Asphalt Green Again

  • I passed by around 10:30 am, today. Saw only two workers; both sitting, having a snack, watching women walk by. Always add at least 2X to the expected completion of any NYC construction project. Maybe even 3X. — Dave on Nosy Neighbor: Any Update on the Chambers Construction?

  • Had a wonderful dinner here tonight. Very energetic dining room so if you are looking for a quiet dinner, this is not the place. The food was excellent. Bar was very well attended. The service was extremely friendly and felt very comfortable and welcome. I thought the decor was very appropriate and really loved the look and feel of the place. — KerryF on Private: Tribeca Canvas (Closed)

  • Ordered takeout twice right after they opened. Excited by the prospect of some new dishes not offered elsewhere: Laal Maans, a lamb dish I'd never seen before. Not exciting, but well prepared. Goan Shrimp Curry had mushy shrimp, and quite small ones, but nicely flavored. I used to be a regular at Taj Tribeca, which seems to have been going downhill from the day it opened, with changes of ownership and changes of chefs. This is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, since I can't afford Tamarind. I wasn't aware they even had a beer license, or I would have dined at the restaurant. I'll try it soon. Takeout order- taker very genial and well- informed, but both times the delivery boy arrived without sufficient change. Second time he had no change at all, and was chagrined and offered to go back to the restaurant to get it. Two bucks extra is not going to kill me, but it was annoying since I had asked the order-taker to be sure the delivery man had change. — Robert Pearson on First Impressions: Benares

  • I cannot begin to express the joy I felt when I read that Zona is returning! I'm a writer, and when I lived in NYC in the 80s and 90s, my reward for a royalty check or a new contract signed was always something from Zona. I still have bowls, candlesticks, a rain stick, a marble peach--so many Zona things in my home. I'm coming to the pop up store this afternoon and cannot wait! — Ann Hood on First Look Inside the ZONA Pop-Up

  • you are correct about the WTC spire - i asked a construction worker late the other night and he said they were trucking in pieces of the antenna this week. thanks for keeping us updated! — chelseay on Seen & Heard: Federal Plaza Gets Classy

  • Thanks for the in depth review of Benares. I went there for Sunday lunch last weekend - two adults two children. I found the food to be delicious and the service to be very friendly and eager to serve. I had ordered two fish dishes from their prix fixe and the kids had tandoori chicken. My friend had a shrimp dish. The fish and chicken were all very moist and flavorful. I told them when ordering that I can't eat dairy or gluten and they spoke to the check, who removed any of those elements from my dishes. Food was served hot. We were favorably impressed and enjoyed the spacious booth and the modern decor. I agree, it looks like they have expectations of doing a big bar biz. I hope it works for them. I was favorably impressed and hope Benares does well in our neighborhood. — Jamie on First Impressions: Benares

  • Awesome! In exchange for the upzoning, Community Board 1 can insist the city build another new elementary school in lower Manhattan by 2014. Precedent? The B&N building on Warren was up-zoned in exchange for a K-8 from the city (B&N took eight months to finish, school took years. But still). — j frank parnell on In the News: The Dead Rabbit
