  • Thanks for the photos. Great reminder of how things have changed. In 1974, The New York Post did an article of the neighborhood, showcased with a photo of me, a tenant, standing in front of my apartment building, IPN, and the caption was, "Pioneer." I will contact the Post's archives and see if I can get a copy of the photo. In 1974, very few residents were willing to walk down the dark streets pass the eggs and dairy loft warehouse buildings and step over the construction debris to get to their apartment. The photos show that the neighborhood grew from four thousand residents, mostly artists in lofts, to the 40,000 to 50,000 who live here now. — Pearl Duncan on A Scrapbook of Old Tribeca

  • The rats there have become quite nonchalant about their interaction with neighborhood residents. Tonight I stopped a family with a young girl from walking into the path of a rat who was taking his sweet time about inspecting some garbage before casually strolling back into the construction shed. It so happens that I'm a big rodent fan, and am not bothered by (though I'm realistic about the dangers of) street rats. But I imagine a lot of screaming takes place there at night as pedestrians head toward the restaurant zone. — David G. Imber on In the News: Bogardus Garden Fence to Come Down

  • These photographs are amazing. They vividly illustrate how temporary our surroundings really are. And, they remind me of two things; to take photographs of things are are not always conventionally beautiful, and to resist the urge to clean house. Thank you to those who have recorded the moment, kept it, and have shared with us now. — Andrea on A Scrapbook of Old Tribeca

  • I don't think it is fair to ask tribeca owners or tenants to contribute to the park. Given its public property it is better to lobby the city council to allocate funds to it and at the same time improve defenses against potential future storms. Sandy affected all New Yorkers not just west side residents and there should be congressional funding for recovery and preventive efforts. This can be used in conjunction with improving the park. — Gong on The Proposed Hudson River Park Tax: A Response

  • I think the problem is not the black façade, but that the space is so large. You have to do a ton of business to pay the rent. Compounding that, Trattoria Cinque was fairly inexpensive, so the average check was fairly by Tribeca standards. The space needs to be split into two restaurants, unless that Marc Forgione steakhouse is a real blockbuster. — Marc Shepherd on Trattoria Cinque Has Indeed Closed

  • I have observed these smoke emissions many times and I refuse to believe that they are legal. The air on that part of Thomas becomes unbreathable and thick with soot, and the noise is defeaning.
