  • I think it is more important for the parents of PS 234 to be concerned with not being rezoned into Chinatown than it is to be worried whether their child is enjoying too many of the Duane Park Patisserie's patissreies. — Buzz on New Kid on the Block: Polarn O. Pyret

  • Given the childhood obesity epidemic, with 1 in 5 NYC kindergarteners being obese, do you really think that sending them to school in horizontal stripes is the best fashion choice? I hope that the PS 234 Rapid Response Team mobilizes rapidly to confront this problem. No bake sales, for obvious reasons. — Jim Smithers on New Kid on the Block: Polarn O. Pyret

  • that's typically what i hear next, Erik, and that's great if some choose not to watch tv, however, there is absolutely no correlation between smarts and watching tv! none. perhaps watch more efficiently (dvr) or just don't watch a lot of mindless tv, but i promise you it won't make you less smart to unwind with a 30 minute tv show or even to turn it on to watch something educational (dare I!)....or the dreaded 'big game'. it should not effect how much one reads or does other 'smart' things if one manages one's time appropriately. i know you're a smart fellow and that wouldn't change if i found out it was more then just on planes... — omar magoo on In the News: Unstable Behavior

  • I have heard Grayson Hugh perform recently (in CT and at Hill Country on 26th St.), after losing track of him for years. His voice and piano playing are sensational. If you're in the City over New Year's weekend, this concert is not to be missed! The concert begins at 4:30pm and will end at 7:00pm, with one intermission. Tickets are $15. For reservations, call V Cafe at (212) 431-5888. (No, I'm not working for him or the restaurant, I'm just a huge fan of Grayson's music and V Cafe's Pho!) — SJW on Coming Up: Scott Weiland Sings Christmas Songs

  • @Rudihanja: True. There have been many others that have been outside Tribeca, with more to come, because I think the neighborhood-boundary notion is sort of arbitrary. If I could rename the contest (and even the site), I might. — Erik Torkells on Where in Tribeca…?

  • Oh, greeeeat. Just what this tightly-wound, oops, tightly-knitted neighborhood needs - another coffee store. Why can't we get a nail salon, wine store, another Bouley kiosk, Target or a properly-sized J. Crew store? This neighborhood is progressing into the shitter. — Jim Smithers on Kaffe 1668 Redux

  • This is Frederique Thiollet, proprietress of Hotel Particulier, and I would like to respond to the comment posted. Hotel Particulier won’t be a nightclub; we will be closing at 10pm weekly and 12 am on weekends. Hotel Particulier will be indeed a special cultural point of connection with an art gallery, an independent curated accessory shop opening at 11am - And a café, teahouse in the back opening at 3pm with coffee, tea, small savory and sweet plates along with wine and champagne. We want to reintroduce the culture of café society with salons and revues in a very contemporary manner, all with savoir-vivre. We also want to be an egalitarian enclave, there will be no red rope, and we welcome you all. To the person who wrote the posting, I sincerely invite you to come when we open in the Spring of 2012 and please kindly ask for me personally, I would be delighted to make your acquaintance. In regards to the liquor license, we won’t be offering a full bar but wine and champagne only – we already have been accepted for it by the community board – Hotel Particulier will be the exception. I am looking forward to being part of your community and to contributing to the cultural landscape of New York City. Sincerely yours, Frederique Thiollet. — Frederique Thiollet on In the News: Judge Rules Against OWS

  • Wow, if ADT, a security company (!), is indeed guilty of doing what the suit charges, then a) the term "willful, malicious and reprehensible" has rarely been more immediately meaningful, and b) my view of the condition of capitalism in this country, not to mention the concept of a social contract in general, will degrade badly. Then again, if they're not guilty, the conclusion doesn't make me feel that much better. Thanks (I guess) for reporting this. Would otherwise never imagine such situations existed. — David G.
