I never had a dog until recently ( I’m 64) so I didn’t understand. Dogs are as much a part of the family as anyone else. If you have never had a dog you honestly cannot understand and it seems ridiculous. I now take my dog everywhere with me and rarely go to places that don’t permit them. I hope this helps you to understand why they are there. Of course they must be well behaved and properly leashed :) — SW on First Impressions: The Tin Building
what are they going to put now when this store closes like where are people going to buy — Vrion Noeri on Bed Bath & Beyond will close in the coming weeks
Very cool. Thanks for posting. — SW on The sturgeon are coming
Barclay Tower also doesn't let delivery personnel through its lobby, requiring them to use the service entrance a couple of doors down. Although I think this may be a more common practice in NYC. And from what I remember, they used to be even stricter about their dog policy, limiting dogs to no greater than 30 pounds. I believe this was loosened during 2020 when they were experiencing higher vacancies due to the pandemic. — James S on In the News: A super tall marches on
The NY Times just published an article about how surprisingly well Barnes & Noble was doing since their restructure. In fact, they're actually expanding in locations instead of consolidating: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/28/opinion/barnes-noble-amazon-bookstore.html Doesn't mean anything about the specific Tribeca location, but it's a good sign that this one might stick around. — JamesS on Bed Bath & Beyond will close in the coming weeks
Yeah, I noticed three sky walks going up on the same day in the neighborhood.. Thought it was odd, but to your point, I know at least one if going up because of Local Law 11 (at my building). - Sigh, I guess that's what comes with living in a major (and old) city.. — B.Thompson on Seen & Heard: No escape from the sidewalk sheds
I wouldn't be very optimistic. Lot of folks browse, but very few buy - more like a test-drive for an online transaction. — alee on Bed Bath & Beyond will close in the coming weeks

Thanks everybody! Bittersweet to revisit these images & people working in places that no longer exist. And I too especially miss Nik and the family at Mangez. This is a little of what I wrote 8 years ago: "A whole block of low rise buildings has been amassed by a developer, and the plan is to shortly force out all the residents and businesses, so the whole block width can be torn down, to be replaced with taller, modern buildings. Typical New York story. However, this block is part of old Tribeca, amidst several blocks that preservationists- myself included- have been fighting for a while to get added to the Tribeca historic district. This is also a story about the small businesses which have been located here for years, and in some cases, decades, and the people who own and work in them. Most are restaurants or bars owned by individuals who will be forced to shutter and never be able to reopen in the neighborhood, if anywhere. Instead of small, locally owned business, in a few years we will likely have just more chain stores like banks, Starbucks or Duane Reade." — Robert Ripps on A photographer captures the last signs of life on West Broadway and Warren
This is a shame, but the fault lies partly with the Tribeca community. Nowadays everyone wants to buy things on the cheap from Amazon, and this is the result. Of course I would never expect anyone to shop exclusively there, but if people in the neighborhood had peppered this location with just a few purchases every once in a while, maybe it would have made the cut. — William on Bed Bath & Beyond will close in the coming weeks

Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos. I patronized all of these businesses and miss them. Land marking Tribeca has been a flawed process that started too late and we ended up with too little. With regard to 172 Duane Street (P you are correct about the address), I submitted a service request through 311.nyc about the plastic barricades that have blocked the street for years. They collect garbage, attract rats, and are an eyesore. There is no construction going on. Curiously, they remove them each year for Taste of Tribeca and then they reappear. It took them three weeks to tell me that it is not in the purview of the Department of Transportation. Case closed. Any advice? Anyone? — Elizabeth on Nosy Neighbor: Why is the roadway still blocked on Duane Street?
A number of wonderful businesses were destroyed, including the longtime Laotian/French restaurant run by the same family for decades. They didn't want yo leave, but were forced out and replaced by...dirt. As you can see. — Bruce on 65 West Broadway site is for sale
You speak the truth but the beauty of these open public spaces are and will remain All Are Welcome. The Hudson River Park is a glorious parade of many. But yes the divide continues no doubt. — TG on The sturgeon are coming
I worry about the structural destabilization of existing buildings by these new large developments as what appears to have been the case up the block on Park Place and Murray when the new 19 Park Place development went up and seemed to have destabilized its direct neighbors to the west on Murray and Park Place. More focus should be placed in this issue in Tribeca. — Anonymous on 65 West Broadway site is for sale
Heartbreaking. This is my block. I remember those buildings, those businesses, those people. All destroyed because some politician drew a line just a little to the side when they established historic district protections. And now we have a big hole in the ground. They won. I hope the developers are proud of themselves. — Will M on A photographer captures the last signs of life on West Broadway and Warren
This is a real heart-breaker. I marched with others protesting only weeks before they destroyed this entire row of 19th century, utterly irreplaceable structures. And now we have an ugly hole in the ground. Amazing, so many years after the destruction of Penn Station, we're still permitting this sort of vandalism in our greatest city. — Will on 65 West Broadway site is for sale
Same old story….rip down authentic architecture where residents were able to socialize, eat out and enjoy life and community and support shop owners and restaurants….and replace it with a gaping construction pit held up in years upon years of financial litigations, which means absolutely nothing to the day to day lives of those who actually LIVE and WORK in tribeca. (Except maybe to those who live on the opposite side of that wall…) all for the same purpose of creating yet another luxury loft living space…whose residents now have fewer authentic restaurants, and bars, and shops….to enjoy. Maybe the ground floor will be a Starbucks??? Or a bank. That would be nice….. — Lisa on 65 West Broadway site is for sale
