Correct. 90% or more goes to the company that employs the chuggers. — Makes You Go Hmmmm.... on Nosy Neighbor: Is there a non-profit scam going on?
And if I'm not mistaken, the chuggers get a portion of all donations they bring in. — TribecaMom on Nosy Neighbor: Is there a non-profit scam going on?
People need to understand that if you want less of something (be it traffic, pollution, carbon, etc.), you need to charge/tax the people/activities creating the problem to change their decision making and price in the externality. It is not about raising money but changing behavior. — James on CB1 Tonight: Solutions for pedestrians at the Holland Tunnel
It’s about time! Think closing Vestry so it can’t be used to access the tunnel will have an enormous impact on improving safety in our community and finally stopping the insane congestion that builds at the Hudson/Vestry intersection. This is a neighborhood filled with young children not a highway and the aggressive dangerous driver behavior has to be stopped. Thrilled that the safety of children and pedestrians is finally being prioritized over drivers. — Neighbor on CB1 Tonight: Solutions for pedestrians at the Holland Tunnel
Dream on. NYPD proves daily they have zero interest in traffic-law enforcement. Our best hope is to lower thru-traffic volumes, via congestion pricing. Tolling eastbound vehicle traffic on the Wmsburg, Manhattan & Bklyn Bridges will reroute a significant portion of LI-to-Jersey traffic to the Verrazzano, sparing lower Manhattan. More here: http://www.komanoff.net/cars_II/Why_downtown_should_back_congestion_pricing.php I again urge my neighbors and our electeds who shudder at the thought of paying a toll to drive into and out of the Manhattan central business district to understand that the only way to drive a stake in the heart of gridlock is to charge every -- no exceptions -- car and truck trip that contributes to it. — Komanoff on CB1 Tonight: Solutions for pedestrians at the Holland Tunnel
Critical that this issue gets addressed. Watts also has a similar traffic pattern with tunnel traffic tying up quiet, local, residential streets in an attempt to save maybe a couple of seconds. Blocking the box, running reds, and illegal turns need to be strictly enforced. I've seen tons of cars make rights from Hubert and Vestry and go the wrong way against traffic down Hudson because they get trapped. Cars need to be forced to enter the tunnel via Canal from the WSH or up Hudson. No thru-traffic on local side streets. — person on CB1 Tonight: Solutions for pedestrians at the Holland Tunnel
We need actual enforcement of the laws against blocking pedestrian walkways, blocking the intersection, horn honking, reckless driving, red-light running, etc. — Marcus on CB1 Tonight: Solutions for pedestrians at the Holland Tunnel
These groups are known as "chuggers"...charity muggers. Very often, little more than 10 cents of every dollar collected actually goes to the target charity. — Makes You Go Hmmmm.... on Nosy Neighbor: Is there a non-profit scam going on?
I think this is the same group that was set up in front of Target for awhile (going by the pink table). The daily forced back and forth “sorry, no thank you….I really can’t, sorry….again, no thank you” had me change my route home from work until they moved. I ran into the same group you posted and in front of Whole Foods as well. They definitely have remarkable persistance haha! — JB on Nosy Neighbor: Is there a non-profit scam going on?
Funny this should appear... I have noticed that, for years, the stretch of Church Street (east side) from Chambers to Duane Street hosts a littered sidewalk. Some junk appears to be commercial waste; others, personal or residential. I marvel at the real estate values in this vicinity that I have sometimes thought of as "Trashy Tribeca." (And, yes, thanks to some sewer snafu, the stretch from Park Place past Reade Street often smells better with a mask on!) Don't even start on the condition of the sloped, broken and otherwise torturous sidewalks themselves. Can't we have better streets than this? Shame indeed! — GBD on Seen & Heard: Retail coming alive
Agreed on new CVS I did notice a lot of egg choices. Ha. Wasn’t buying so didn’t check prices. — j. on New Chain Kids on the Block: CVS and 7-Eleven
The new CVS is great! Stopped in there after it opened and was thrilled with how friendly the staff was and with how well-stocked the store seemed to be. The 7/11 near Park Place is also a definite step-up from the previous one, and they have a great coffee selection there as well for anyone who likes the iced variety. This past week, a smoke shop also opened up next to the the 7/11 at the corner of Church and Park Place. This is technically the same space as the 7/11, but was divided after the De Janeiro store moved. Not as thrilled with this addition. — James S on New Chain Kids on the Block: CVS and 7-Eleven
I found Warren King's story - and the story of that experimental public art day - very moving. What a wonderful neighborhood find! Thank you. — AFS on Second Acts: The art of Warren King
surely you can’t be serious. i live 2 blocks from the radisson and walk by it nearly daily and have never had a problem. gunshots? seriously? i’ve walked by at night by myself many many times (a scary prospect anywhere in the city!) and not once have i felt unsafe — emily on In the News: City to close shelter at 52 William
It is fitting for our essential workers to have a plaque embedded on our Canyon of Heroes. I found myself walking by while the workers were "cementing" the plaque in. As important, is our commitment to honor these workers in an even more personal way; vote for politicians that honor the hard work of all essential workers with a living wage and appropriate and fair raises and increases. We would be lost without them all. — TG on Seen & Heard: Little fires everywhere
Thank you for the Anna Schechtman mention and links. A truly intelligent and capable young person. Brava Ms. Schechtman. — TG on In the News: ‘Museum’ of women coming to Soho this summer
