I bike on Lafayette often - there’s very little traffic there and what there is, moves pretty well. It never gets jammed like 6th Ave does. It feels like to me lime it was designed so wide when there was a different commerce pattern downtown. Also I just came back from Buenos Aires where all the bike lanes are two-way - bicyclists are careful when passing each other and it works rather well, actually. Although I have to say that the fact that there aren’t that many throttle electric bikes there and when someone is on one, they’re in the main roadway with the cars, helps A LOT. — Judy Levine on Lafayette will get a new two-way bike lane through the Village and Soho

The children are indeed digging them up and moving them. I saw one boy loading them on to his scooter , moving them half way around the park then building what he called a "scooter killer," to make a hazard for kids on scooters. I have no idea how to stop this if the parents or caregivers allow it. Is there a sign saying not to dig them up? Without an imposed common sense test before entry to the park, you can’t really weed out the dumb ones. I haven’t been in that park for so long, but it seems ridiculous that either the caretakers or the parents are letting this happen and think it’s OK. @Lisa: I appreciated most of your comment. We agree on much. However, I didn't appreciate your insinuation that I don't want Uber et al. to pay deliveristas more and to foot the bill for better working conditions. Since 2023 I've published three articles (in Streetsblog & Vital City) calling for a NYC distance-based surcharge on app-mediated food deliveries, with proceeds paying for safe-battery swap-outs and to build and staff deliverista rest stations. like the one just installed outside City Hall. That would have cut mightily into app company profits (hooray!) and reduced total deliverista mileage (also hooray). Alas, it hasn't happened. That doesn't stop me from savoring the City Hall station as a reasonable second best for deliverista comfort and socialization. "Not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good" is how I roll. Speaking of rolling, like you, I never ever order food delivery. I cook (that's me at Trader Joe's stuffing my bicycle bags with groceries). As I said, we agree on much.
