Sean- Thanks for letting us know who Mark Gordon is and what he believes in! All the negative ads are really unfortunate - especially during the current political climate. — SP on Following the Money in the City Council race, Part 2
This is a clarification about the location of the Chinatown Market in Kam Man Market. It is on the (closed) second floor. Gratefully, Kam Man is open and vibrant as ever, and continues to serve the community with Asian groceries, a small apothecary, savory barbecued meats to go, as well as housewares and beauty supplies in the basement. Stop by! — Lisa on Seen & Heard: BPC farmers market has performance for kids
Traffic police aren’t actual police. They could only give parking tickets. — Bill on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
Am i the only who thinks crime and disorder is the #1 issue? Not a single candidate to my knowledge has prioritized this. Tribeca is supposed to be a pleasant place to live peacefully. — rob on Following the Money in the City Council race, Part 2
Agree! — bradley schiff on Neighborhood joints on The Times’ 100 Best Restaurants list
In addition to lack of police enforcement, they always return because of the hordes of tourists who buy the bags and other fake designer goods. Do you think public shaming of the buyers would work? I’ve been known to yell loudly at them when they are blocking the entrance to the subway. I’ve called 311 many times but it feels useless. It really has become an epic problem lately. And/also, just saying this out loud, maybe this is an appropriate situation for ICE to deal with? — Andrea on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
Eulalie should be on the list. — A2 on Neighborhood joints on The Times’ 100 Best Restaurants list
Our other local news publication (Battery Broadsheet) had an in depth article early this year on Marte’s views on City of Yes and his vote against. Agree or disagree, but know what’s he was really saying. https://www.ebroadsheet.com/saying-no-to-city-of-yes/ — Jeff on City Council Primary 2025: Christopher Marte
The open sales of drugs always shocks me. The dealers have a tables with jars of cannabis out in the open for sale and the traffic police walk right by and do nothing. — Randy on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
Periodically, over the decades, there have been high-level attempts to get rid of the counterfeiters. Unless until that happens, you’re dealing only with the visible symptom and public nuisance, and the vendors will always, always, return. — Old Timer on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
Love this, it's definitely a start. I'll be sharing with others! Please sign! — TribecaDad on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
Part of the problem is that Broadway is the boundary between the 1st and 5th Police Precincts. As a result, neither one takes responsibility to patrol on foot and clean up the situation. Manhattan South Patrol Borough is the level of police command that could coordinate their responses. Tweet at: NYPD Manhattan South @NYPDPBMS Assistant Chief James N. McCarthy, Commanding Officer. The official Twitter of NYPD Patrol Borough Manhattan South 230 E. 21st St., New York NY, 10010 (212) 477-7436 — James Bogardus on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
I have spoken numerous times with the police about the issue. They always tell me something to the effect - "Nothing will change unless the powers at the top change". — Marcus on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
Shouldn't the petition also be addressed to our City Council representative, Christopher Marte? — Marcus on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
Up to 174 signers now! The only concern is that this petition focuses on Lispenard Street. If enforcement does happen just on that street, it will just push the vendors onto neighboring streets. There needs to be general citywide enforcement (and as the petition does suggest, targeting the criminal supply networks at source). Is there a way to contact the petition organizer to modify the wording to make it a more general petition? — Marcus on A petition to address the counterfeit vendors on Broadway & Lispenard
Agree. — Alexandra Neil on City Council Primary 2025: Christopher Marte
^^^ same. He has been endorsed by WFP and New York Progressive Action Network. We're not interested in NYC becoming Los Angeles so it's a hard pass for me. — Concerned Citizen on City Council Primary 2025: Christopher Marte
Coleman is Jewish! Marte is endorsed by the Working families party, who endorsed anti-israel Mamdani for their NUMBER ONE spot for mayor https://workingfamilies.org/2025/06/nywfp-voting-guide-for-the-2025-primary-election/ I'll let you decide which one you think will be better for Jews here. — danny on City Council Primary 2025: Christopher Marte
Helpful explanation, thanks. I'm not a Marte supporter but it's unfortunate this financial disclosure data requires additional steps to identify when money is spent *against* a candidate. — Chris on Following the Money in the City Council race, Part 2
BTW for those who believe in COY, it may be useful to read the below link from EV Grieve which discusses massive difficulties, horrible conditions etc suffered by tenants for years due to bad landlords. This is just one example of many throughout NYC. Bad NYC landlords are sadly not new news. https://evgrieve.com/2025/06/east-village-tenants-call-for-nonprofit.html — lisa on City Council Primary 2025: Christopher Marte
I've had contact with Chris Marte's office relating to various trash issues - they've always been pleasant and helpful. — lisa on City Council Primary 2025: Christopher Marte
My understanding is that Mark Gorton has been the prime contributor/political-policy advocate for the related bike lobby/advocacy entitles - Transportation Alternatives, Open Plans, Streetsblog, StreetsPAC.... Also Sara Lind, co-director of Open Plans is noted as affiliated with People for Public Space. I don't quite understand how it works to have the same people be involved in multiple groups/non-profits with different names but which have the same focus? — lisa on Following the Money in the City Council race, Part 2
Thisnis my number one issue. Marte has been silent on this. Disqualifies him for me. — Scott on City Council Primary 2025: Christopher Marte
People for Public Space, which - ironically - lobbies for privatization of public space, did indeed spend money on the Marte Campaign — but on an opposition campaign. Look closely at the Campaign Finance Board link provided and it shows the PAC spent $30,707 to “oppose”. Yes, all those negative mailers against Marte were coming from People for Public Space. Fun Fact: The total funding of $320,000 to People for Public Space for this campaign was supplied by Mark Gorton. Gorton, a multimillionaire hedgefunder, is an anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist who contributed millions to RFK’s failed presidential campaign and even served as its campaign manager. This guy supports Coleman, not Marte. What does that tell you? — Sean on Following the Money in the City Council race, Part 2
We need to put more pressure on Chris Marte's office and NYPD 1st Precinct to find a solution to this problem. This is not unsolvable. It's happening in plain sight of the NYPD. The NYPD should also consider taking action against consumers / people knowingly buying the counterfeit / stolen goods. This would send the right message. — HD on City Council Primary 2025: Christopher Marte
