  • Nice progress. Good to hear this morning. — j. on Work on monument is paused through July 6

  • Good news, but Tsunis saying " ... to discuss the location of the monument in Battery Park City ..." indicates this memorial is not leaving BPC, even if it leaves Rockefeller Park. If the goalposts of the argument will only move that far: Belvedere Plaza is already a paved grove of trees awaiting a stone & flame. — J Frank P on Work on monument is paused through July 6

  • Bravo to the community and to Deborah Glick, Yuh-Line, and all the elected officials who went to bat for us. Let’s hope for once Cuomo listens to the people! Activism at its best. And thank you, Pam, for your passionate coverage of this insanity. — Alex on The monument plans at Rockefeller Park: A Recap

  • Not really. You can look at the NY4P Open Space Index, where the goal is one acre of park land for every 1000 residents. Downtown ranges from 1.5 to 2. But I say "not really" because Chinatown rates among the lowest and its just around the corner. There is also an IBO report on this same topic. Of course this was different before the construction of Hudson River Park in the early '90s... — Tribeca Citizen on Work on monument is paused through July 6

  • Many news agencies are covering this, including: https://news.artnet.com/art-world/cuomo-memorial-controversy-1984756 https://gothamist.com/news/locals-protest-cuomos-plan-install-essential-workers-monument-battery-park-city I once read a statistic detailing the number of square feet of park space per citizen in each neighborhood. Ours was comparatively quite low. Does anyone else know about this and if so where the data comes from? — Heide Fasnacht on Work on monument is paused through July 6

  • Thank you to everyone fighting to keep our beloved park. Thank you, thank you, thank you. — A2 on Seen & Heard: Holding down the fort

  • What sense does it make to issue preliminary results when the phony, test ballots are counted as if they were actual ballots? That said, they did this because the unreasonably long absentee ballot deadline risks tarnishing the unrelated use of ranked choice voting. Voters think they are waiting for RCV, when they are actually waiting for absentee ballots to be tabulated. — James on Seen & Heard: Holding down the fort

  • What sense does it make to issue preliminary results in a ranked-choice election when the absentee ballots aren't factored in? It's a meaningless report since they will have to start from scratch in a couple of weeks. — Jon on Seen & Heard: Holding down the fort

  • A similar protest took place in Stockholm in 1971. People protected 13 Elm tress which the city council wanted to fell in order to create a new metro station. The city lost andthe tress are still there. You can read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elm_Conflict — Heide Fasnacht on There’s a tent city in Rockefeller Park

  • “City and State” has an excellent story on our pushback against Cuomo’s monument, with fine headline, “Battery Park City residents rebel against Cuomo’s planned memorial.” Fyi, "City and State" is targeted at political insiders. Politicians read it, as do journalists. • There's a perfect spot for the memorial: Belvedere Plaza. Add the plaques, the flame, whatever. It's already a paved grove of trees - (think of the savings!) with a better view of the SoL and way, way more foot traffic. — J Frank P on There’s a tent city in Rockefeller Park
