Went to Toby's grand opening today and was the 4th customer. They were just getting things moving but we absolutely delightful and attentive. The space is beautiful, chic, and laid out almost like a restaurant (as opposed to a laptop cafe - a good thing in this neighborhood of cafes). Great little piece on clocks that often go unnoticed! When these clocks were installed in the "pocket watch" era, not everyone could afford a timepiece. These free-to-see clocks (and church bells, too) tried to keep New Yorkers on schedule. One caveat, as Sonia noted: Historic, yes; accurate, no. Since these clocks don't appear to be calibrated chronometers, I wouldn't "set my watch" by them! BTW, what was the final fate of the clock in the tower at 346 Broadway? The problem of W. Broadway's street crossings is the clearing of snow from the bike lanes. When the plows get to the corner they leave the cleared snow from the street on the corner in the crosswalk. Also many stores that take up so much street footage with tables and signage the rest of the year, cleared only a tiny path of snow leaving the rest of the sidewalk hazardous and icy, including not clearing a path at the corner. The scale is one of the major objections to this project. Actually, you could call it two objections about scale: - Too big (and disruptive: construction, future traffic, etc.) for the neighborhood - Too small to hold even the existing inmates. And what happens when another crime wave hits, or we get an administration that actually bothers to arrest and hold people for crimes?
