  • Absolutely agree. There are heinous crimes being committed every single day in NYC and NYPD resources are better spent catching these criminals and preventing these rapes, assaults of innocent New Yorkers. What happened regarding the arrest of the bicycle gang that attacked the BMW. Also, and I say this as a person of color myself the girls behavior had nothing to do with the boy being black. She would have pounced on anyone who she thought had her phone. — Raiina on Demands for the arrest of “Soho Karen” continue

  • You are the one that needs the reality check. This is the incident that you are worried about where our tax payer dollars are going? For god sales; a young man was assaulted. Thank god his father was there because the situation would have turned out very differently if he wasn’t. And none of us have to be geniuses to understand that. — TG on Demands for the arrest of “Soho Karen” continue

  • I'd never heard of them but a friend sent us an enormous pannetone for the holiday from their Harlem location. It was divine I will definitely check them out when safe dining returns, post vaccine!. — martine on New Kid on the Block: Sant Ambroeus

  • Hey Reality Check - I got a reality check for you - the NYPD is the biggest police force in the world - how about they do both - catch the murderers , rapists AND the racist Karens? I think they can handle it. Also, they wouldn't have to send the cops anywhere if they had arrested her on the day she did it. I would love to see you "keep things in perspective" if your kid was tackled and accused of a something they had NOTHING to do with. And since when is tackling a minor "rude" and not assualt? — F on Demands for the arrest of “Soho Karen” continue

  • It's time for the borough jail project to die at last. The pandemic should be the last nail in that coffin. The city is broke, and this was always a misguided project, rammed through without proper input of affected community, and would cost billions, and with no real guarantee of jail reform. Instead, reform the system at Rikers. — Marcus on Community Board 1 agendas for January

  • This is so true! We will probably not have another Republican mayor in this city for a long time (though the last 2 did wonderful things for the city). • I'm not condoning the objectionable nature of the woman's conduct. However, why are we wasting taxpayer dollars to send detectives (plural-more than one) to California when those resources could be better spent searching for criminals wanted for committing crimes such as murder and rape in NYC. I suppose there are no unsolved murders, rapes or serious assaults with hospitalized victims? The rush to assume that this was a racially motivated incident (which I would not discount) does seem highly unfair. Yes her conduct was rude. Yes she did grab the kid and pull him down but he landed on her and he does not appear to be physically injured. Lets just keep things in perspective. Right now there are countless relatives of murder and rape victims who want justice. In a city that routinely releases people accused of crimes without bail provided the victims are not hospitalized this seems to be a total overreaction and waste of resources — Reality Check on Demands for the arrest of “Soho Karen” continue

  • NYPD is sending detectives to California to interview her. WTF, she fled the scene of a crime. • I've recommended this hotel many times, but no more. The Arlo has had plenty of time to educate its staff and create awareness re: racial profiling. It's been open since at least 2017...And were the events of 2020 not enough of a catalyst for them to make this kind of training a priority? That the manager took the side of this woman, with her irrational demands, and then allowed her to leave (after tackling/assualting Mr. Harrold's son) before the police arrived, is further evidence of her privilege and the manager's (and the hotel's) grievous error in judgement. I doubt very much that this incident would have unfolded in this manner had Ms. Ponsetto been obviously a woman of color. The Arlo took its time in responding to the incident publicly, as well. And on their Twitter feed, there's no evidence of the incident at all. As of today, she's still not been questioned, nor charged. — kimberly m. wang on Demands for the arrest of “Soho Karen” continue

  • I, like many, understand the symbolic gesture this statue represents. You can try and rationalize all day that it is only a historical mythological reference, but we ALL know it is much more than that, but keeping with the mythological storyline, Athena's jealousy and bitterness cursed Medusa for what Poseidon did. Yet, this statue is only depicts vengeance upon the Man and ignores Athena's transgression. Why isn't Medusa also holding the head of Athena? Is the representation to suggest only Men will receive this perverted sense of justice? Why not just replace lady justice with this statue now. This would depict a perfect example of "Toxic Feminism". Where's the #NOH8 campaign on that, or does such a campaign only side with the transgressions of LGBTQ and Women? While this statue represents the anger and torment of a women having been raped, it also depicts the toxic retribution of a society accepting of such vengeance. RAPE DOES NOT JUSTIFY POST MEDITATED MURDER. With centuries of racial acts against people of color; from slavery, acts of discrimination, and racial targeting by authorities and the courts..... should there be a statue next to this of a mythological or superhuman colored individual lynching figures representing white male & female Judges, police officers, ect? Of course not, hate begets hate, violence begets violence. So why is this statue celebrated so much? Should there be a statue of a Father showing his children torn away from him by the court system and him holding a saber with Lady Justice's head in his other hand? Should there be a statue of LGBTQs depicting violent and discriminatory acts against those who have oppressed them? The only thing such representations of hate, anger, and vengeance do is incite the same in others. I won't argue, it is a wonderful and very powerful piece of art. Dare I say, comparable to art created during the renaissance. However, there's a very different narrative and feeling this piece invokes that the prior did not and that message isn't one our society should feel comfortable entertaining. Other than the inappropriate message this invokes, it doesn't belong on public streets. Have we come so far as a society that we think it's ok and rationalize placing naked figures on street corners? I see no difference between this and pornography. Can you imagine walking past this with your young children and having to explain why their is a naked statue of a women holding a severed head of a man on the street corner? The possible fears running through the mind of a little girl attempting to understand and imagining what is being explained to her. The possible hatred such young girls might form towards men in the future imagining such violations against her friends, Mother, or herself. You wonder why many children of color are afraid of police..... it's no different. We need to flip the script and change the narrative. In the same way many good police officers go out of their way to help out or become familiar within primarily colored neighborhoods. In the same way, we need to change the view we are depicting of men. Just look at the previous comments....from acceptance and approval of an act of murder to lust. Many don't even care the symbolic nature of this statue, it's just like the Leg Lamp from Christmas Story......from "glowing sex" to cast in bronze. Does the fact that she took justice into her own hands and murdered someone make it ok? If that's the case, with the debated elections, corruption of congressional officials, gender discriminating court justices, racist cops ...... I dare say Biden was absolutely right, the Worst is definitely yet to come. — V for Vendetta on Art in Tribeca: Medusa gets her man

  • I moved in this neighborhood in 1981. I was 14 years old and, my father lived at 310 Greenwich St. I got older and left the neighborhood. And came back in 2001. Tribeca hardware was a fixture for so long. It outlasted 99 cent stores, restaurants, and so many others. I always could depend on our hardware store that carried EVERYTHING. Until one day I was walking down Chamber Street and could NOT believe that the signed read CLOSED. I wondered if it was do to lock downs or rent increase. Well whatever the reason we lost another family owned business that was really a staple in our community. Very very sad😞 — Lisa on Tribeca Hardware is closing at the end of the summer

  • Unfortunately the current list of candidates is very weak. • The city needs to help the mentally ill. If they don't this will never end. The mentally ill, need to be in homes, not shelters. They need to be in a program that doctors watch them and get them on the right meds, then put in homes where they can get their meds and made sure they take their meds. Our jails and shelters are filled with the mentally ill and it is getting us nowhere. So until we deal with the mentally ill this is not going to stop. — t on Man terrorizes the neighborhood for an hour, sending eight to the hospital

  • I first moved to NYC in 1972. I left in 1978 after I was assaulted for the fourth time. A million other New Yorkers also fled during the 70s and 80s, mostly to escape crime. Hollywood made movies like "Death Wish," "Escape from NY" and "Fort Apache." Mayor Giuliani rescued the City by actually doing something about crime and people moved back. Eventually NY became a wonderful place so I returned in 2009. When De Blasio was elected on a social justice platform many predicted "Back to the Future." They were denounced as "racists." Bail reform and the elimination of stop and frisk and broken windows policing have had a predictable effect. The out migration started 3 years before Covid. According to Zillow my Tribeca apartment is now worth way less than I paid for it. All of the current Mayoral aspirants are calling for "equity" and "justice." Fuhgeddabout safety. • I pray for everyone’s sake that you take a really hard look at those running Nov 2021. Start reading up now on who they are, question every statement and their position on the things we all know are important in our beloved city. I implore all to do this. And don’t vote Democrat just because. Don’t be complacent. Debozo is a disgusting human as is his wife. There are some that have expressed publicly they are running and those very same hold similar positions as debozo. Don’t assume that just because he can’t run doesn’t mean there aren’t people that hold the same beliefs, ideologies and positions as he does. Seriously do your homework.
