They seem mostly concern about room to park their (aboveground) patrol vehicles. Let's not forget Park Row, the original blocked street from 9/11 that is still blocked today. Not only is it blocked but there are permanent security barriers and the street has been turned into additional parking for police officers. Agree with Julie W. It's an easy fix to move the Citi bikes a few feet to be outside empty or closed store fronts. Opens up the restaurants and still allows quick access to the bikes. No police, anywhere in the city, wear masks. They are conservative Republicans, macho, who probably don’t believe that the virus will ever affect them or make them sick. This is not just by City Hall Park. The mayor is doing absolutely nothing about the mask situation (or anything else NYPD). He stopped them from enforcing social distancing, early in the pandemic, because 80% of the people that they went after were black or Hispanic. Yes, they are racist. I live on Broadway & Warren. I just had surgery, so having to walk all the way around City Hall Park in order to get to the Lexington Avenue subway is beyond my capabilities. I keep hoping that they will open Chambers Street, at least to pedestrians, and they show no inclination to do this. This is completely outrageous. I don’t know what’s going on with the other side of City Hall Park, by the Lexington Avenue subway station. I certainly hope that they have opened that, because it has the only elevator to that station. If you were old or disabled, without the elevator, you’re simply out of luck. That means to me. While I agree the sidewalks should be open to foot traffic, many residents would be very happy seeing street closures to "non-resident" car traffic. I've heard clamoring to see the Beach Street exits (the Holland Tunnel round-about exits that book-end Ericsson Place street) be permanently closed! I just wish some of these Citibike stands could be moved to allow some of these restaurants the ability to take advantage of as much space as possible. Particularly the ones on Duane and Harrison- if they were moved just a block away to Greenwich (where there are so many empty storefronts) these places would be able to accommodate 2x3x the number of customers. Agreed.... It makes the streets feel more like a living part of the city. Putting the tables and chairs in the street on the sidewalk also frees up the sidewalk space more. Some of the initial attempts were just quickly thrown together out of necessity, but now that restaurant owners are realizing this could be for the long haul, and even for a time when/if COVID is ever over that it might remain a seasonal mode of dining, there is more effort to make it an aesthetic experience as well. I do hope this becomes an established way to use outdoor space going forward, at least seasonally.
