  • Word in my building 275 Greenwich is that it is over. No renovation. It's out of business — Jg on Don’t panic: Gee Whiz is renovating

  • Cornell University's department of ornithology has a great, free bird identification app called Merlin. It walks you through a series of questions about the bird and its activity and then suggests several birds (with photos and additional information) that meets the criteria you've input. It can also listen to a bird call or use your photo for identification. It's great for travel too because it has a large number of additional "packs" you can download that include the birds of specific countries and regions around the world. — N on Seen & Heard: Hobby Lobby signage gets bold

  • The problem here is that the relatively new building on the southwest corner of White and 6th was given special privileges to built there in exchange for funding the renovation of the triangle. They never provided that funding. They should have paid for a full renovation. — Heide Fasnacht on Vote for funding for Barnett Newman Triangle and PS 234

  • I'm all for green-ifying Barnett Newman Triangle. However: $250k just for planters? That seems insane. Shouldn't the cost for planters, with plants, be more like...$2.5k, if that? For $250k, I think we should be able to buy one of the Broken Obelisks and install it in the Triangle. Similarly, curtains cost... $250k? Are they made of gold leaf and encrusted with diamonds? Jungle gym and play mats - $1 million? Can anyone explain these prices? Inquiring minds want to know. — Marcus on Vote for funding for Barnett Newman Triangle and PS 234

  • Sandra, there is no need for yelling. No one is going to force you participate in a protest, although I do find it interesting that your main objection to a protest is that it will attract the type of person you do not wish to see spending time in our neighborhood. Perhaps you might be more comfortable living in a gated community where you have the option to refuse admission to those with whom you disagree. — Mary Amsterdam on Hobby Lobby has installed signs on Greenwich

  • At least for now, organizing a protest is still our right as citizens. And I find it interesting that your main objective to a protest is that it might attract the type of people you do not wish to see in this neighborhood. However, you do make a point that I do not in fact speak for every resident of Tribeca, and apparently a company that is as intolerant, homophobic and misogynistic as Hobby Lobby does appeal to some. My apologies. Enjoy your shopping experience. — mary amsterdam on Hobby Lobby has installed signs on Greenwich

  • Nolan's Deli! It was definitely there until at least 1998, but I think the Gee Whiz expansion happened before 9/11? It's hard to remember because the space has expanded/contracted at least a few times since then. Not sure if anyone else remembers (and misses) the Pennsylvania Pretzel Company, too! :) — Elizabeth on Don’t panic: Gee Whiz is renovating

  • I think it must have been 2002. My memory is that they were closed for a time after it was possible to go south of Chambers again after 9/11 because they were doing the expansion. One of my best Gee Whiz memories was the morning Tribeca got power back after Sandy. My husband and I took an early walk and saw that Gee Whiz was open. We went in and had breakfast. We asked Andy how it was possible, and he told us that an alarm had gone off around 3AM, which alerted him that the power was back. He called his distributor and begged him to deliver perishable breakfast basics asap so he could serve his community. Pete and Andy's kindness and hospitality was unmatched. — N on Don’t panic: Gee Whiz is renovating
