I've never been to Ecco. Never even heard of it or noticed it, which I find amazing as I've lived here for almost 13 years. I can't comment on what's being lost, but I've been to The Grey Dog in Chelsea, and I like it. This area is a landmarked district. The fact that the proposed design "would surely look out of place" is thus a big problem by definition, no matter what the merits, in one's opinion, of the specific proposal may be. I think the rendering is quite attractive, too! As a resident of the street, I can attest that the current structure at Hubert and Collister is empty, in disrepair, without lights, and, as such, regularly draws groups of people drinking, spraying graffiti, and loudly carousing after dark. I actually kind of like it. And the old garage is no great architectural loss. It would surely look out of place among the typical TriBeCa / SoHo Second Empire style neoclassical loft buildings, but among its neighbors, I actually like the effect. This was a meaningful and beautiful stretch of streetscape before the city allowed J & R to build that cheesy big box store on a prominent historic block of our city. Allowing this opened the door to what will come next. This is an ongoing saga of the mega rich exploiting and sanitizing the city with some meaningless variation on the curtain wall building for their own gain and our loss. And for the record, I am in full support of modernist and contemporary architecture that does not "blend" with 19th century cast iron structures. I took a walk through the lobby...Looks great. Fine design styling with furniture, lighting, the large windows to the street. I noticed 2 coffee areas: Blue Bottle and a La Colombe station near the entrance... Competition? Darwinism? The rooms make me feel a bit claustrophobic, though, even by the description!
