Congratulations. Your newsletter is helpful, witty, well-written. It is a great way to start the day. — Betty heller on Seen & Heard: 10 Corso Como Opens Next Week
Chin was elected by a slim margin against a neophyte opposition candidate. She has nothing close to a mandate and her constituents basically sent her a message that she is not a favored politician. Despite this, she has gone ahead and opposed her constituents' wishes by supporting the jail. From Chinatown to Tribeca, there is fierce opposition by residents to the jail. A message must be sent to Chin that she must vote based on the will of the people, and not impose her poor intented will on our citizens. What can you do? Join the various protests that are being organized (there will be a large rally in 2-3 weeks at Chin's office. Sign the petitions. Call Chin's office and demand that she vote the people's desire. Chin has done nothing but harm this neighborhood. IT IS TIME TO STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS TRIBECANS AND FORCE CHIN TO STAND DOWN ON THE JAIL. — Hal on Seen & Heard: Town Hall Meeting on the Jail Plan
" The Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice did not immediately return a request for comment on whether officials from the mayor's office will be present to discuss the plan." Are they kidding? https://patch.com/new-york/lower-east-side-chinatown/city-host-town-hall-manhattan-jail-plan — Marcus on Seen & Heard: Town Hall Meeting on the Jail Plan
A good article arguing why this Rikers closure and move plan is a disaster: https://www.boweryboogie.com/2018/08/why-the-chinatown-jail-proposal-is-a-terrible-idea-op-ed/ …and do sign the petition! and spread it around... — Marcus on Seen & Heard: Town Hall Meeting on the Jail Plan
…and to the lawyers who want to reduce their commuting time. — Marcus on Seen & Heard: Town Hall Meeting on the Jail Plan
Yes, we should pull together on this. I do recommend that everyone who is interested in this matter attend the meetings. The first one is supposed to be on September 12 at 6:00pm at P.S. 124 in Chinatown — Marcus on Seen & Heard: Town Hall Meeting on the Jail Plan
While no one on this site likely knows for sure what the status of this jail is for downtown, can we work together in some way to mount a defense? We don’t know it’s done deal and if we care we should advocate. I plan to at these sessions and thru other channels. — Jj on Seen & Heard: Town Hall Meeting on the Jail Plan
I meant the World Trade Center, not Brookfield Place. — Erik Torkells on Is Amazon Opening a Bookstore Here?
These are chain stores. The “real” versions are NOT in Soho. Soho is just annoyingly turning into an outdoor mall unfortunately. Also you come down here because you can shop and enjoy the beautiful waterfront. Shop then enjoy drinks/lunch or just a walk along the waterfront. US Open tennis courts had a crowd on the North Cove. In the winter, come for the warmth and not having to shop outside. — Demi on Is Amazon Opening a Bookstore Here?
FYI There is an Equinox gym in the mall. I’m a member. There is also a Regal Movie theater across the street which is kinda considered a part of the mall by locals because it is so close. — Demi on Is Amazon Opening a Bookstore Here?
Of course it will be torn down. It is the only old building left in this stretch of Church St. Short sited but profitable. — Janet on The Future of 111 Church
Bravo Old Tribeca!!! So sad she won! Christopher Marte was soo close. We needed a positive change. Margaret Chin was accused of " selling out" to the real estate industry. I mean its obvious. What record does Chin have? Please so many people have moved out when big landlords win. Her and the idiot of a Mayor we have. — NATIVE on In the News: Best Market’s Lease Is About to End
Ms. Chin’s claims that she has a lengthy track record of preserving and building affordable housing, “the only track record she has is building affordable housing that is not affordable. Margaret Chin’s legacy will be one of displacement and evictions in the next ten years because of the over-development that she has done in this community.” state tenant activist Imperiale. And I say, what was Ms. Chin doing for Independence Plaza when it was bought out of the Mitchell Lama program, by a landlord whose full intention was to convert to high rental, which is what the majority of the rentals are right now. A handful of tenants qualify for the awful HPD sticky voucher program which almost forces people to stay at poverty level! And what is the status of the Small Business Jobs Survival Act (SBJSA), that Margaret Chin supported, which is a proposal to give commercial tenants some rights when renegotiating leases with their landlords. In Margaret Chin’s own words....”I have a record of achieving results for tenants, and small business owners”. So, “Hudson River” Try doing your homework before commenting. I do believe that Best Market does fall into a small business correct? — Old Tribeca on In the News: Best Market’s Lease Is About to End
there have been " plenty" of things Margaret Chin hasn't done for our community. Starting with IPN. We are sad she won again. — NATIVE on In the News: Best Market’s Lease Is About to End
I'm going on the record as pro-lavender. Surrender, Dorothy! — Will Meyerhofer on Seen & Heard: Dig Inn Opening Date
It makes sense to the contractors who are in with the City and who will get the big contracts for the work. — IJM on Seen & Heard: Town Hall Meeting on the Jail Plan
the whole idea is farcical...the process is simply outrageous. In what world does this new jail make any sense to anyone? — Will Meyerhofer on Seen & Heard: Town Hall Meeting on the Jail Plan
The building is an eyesore. Good riddance. — IJM on The Future of 111 Church
Nope. Presumably it fell apart for whatever reason. — Erik Torkells on A New Plan for the American Flatbread Space
Any idea what happened to this plan for 205 Hudson St? https://tribecacitizen.wpengine.com/2018/01/04/more-on-the-plan-for-the-american-flatbread-space/ — Iris on A New Plan for the American Flatbread Space
new slate. out with the old, in with the new. — perryo on The Future of 111 Church
sure, why not...it's just a magnificent remnant of a time before the Civil War - no reason not to destroy it in a matter of days, erase our city's history and throw up something entirely anonymous. — Will Meyerhofer on The Future of 111 Church
I like it as well. Hated it a first, but it grows on you. — Ted on Seen & Heard: Dig Inn Opening Date
New York City cannot legalize what New York State makes illegal. Motorized, non-pedal-assist bikes are illegal in New York State. Blame Cuomo. NYC did what it could on e-bikes, and now you are faulting them for that? How does that work? Who knows whether the corporate bikes were the impetus or not? They held them off (to protect Citi Bike's investment in docks) as long as possible. As far as NYC and corporations, de Blasio and the City Council have recently dealt blows to AirBnB and Uber (even if only to benefit hotels and medallion owners, respectively.) — James on In the News: Cast Iron House Got a $45 Million Loan
Right, part 3. One month prior to rolling out the corporate motorized bikes, the DOT legalized motorized bikes and the mayor and NYPD do a 180 on their stance on motorized bikes. JUMP motorized dockless bikes are aimed mainly for tourists, newbie transplants (long-time tourists) and the wealthy and privileged (the tech and finance bros). But hey, enjoy. It's the new and your New York now. — JOR on In the News: Cast Iron House Got a $45 Million Loan
