  • Some time ago USPS eliminated about 50% of the then existing street post office boxes in the nabe. This new purge should reduce the existing ones to about a quarter of the original number. Some of the boxes still extant are so stuffed with mail by the end of the day that you can't put anything more into them. • Chinatown is only a hop, skip, and jump away. What's the point of living in a city, a walkeable city, a very nice walkeable city, if one would just confine themselves in their four walls and have almost everything delivered to them. — JOR on Where to Order Chinese Food in Tribeca (2018 Edition)

  • With all the great local food in NYC, any cuisine one could ask for..... corporate/chains are taking over. I'll take the mom and pop restaurants and support the local places over a corporate chain any day. Very sad what is happening to the city. — TE on Inside the Huge New Chick-fil-A

  • I miss the Pathmark!! Used to shop there all the time. One Manhattan Square is so ugly - it was a complete political coup between Bloomberg and developer..It took years but they got what they wanted. It is really ugly but hopefully some really nice people will move in and appreciate the neighborhood. — TG on Field Trip: Two Bridges

  • It's bad enough that anything over 13 ounces, which the post office considers a pound (in the real world 16 ounces is a pound) has to be brought to the post office, but a lot of people don't work near a post office. • Perhaps dibalsio should do something about skyrocketing building costs (water/utility costs, constant code changes/inspectors/fines, taxes) which is why rents , common charges etc keep going up. The department of buildings and the department of environmental protections are the modern day mafias that no one is talking about. They are fleecing every building right now with 500-5000 fines. Annual building changes that are costing buildings 1000-100,000 in new costs. Killing small buildings, while giving big tax breaks to new buildings and developers. — Tribeca resi on In the News: De Blasio Considering “Vacancy Tax” on Retail Landlords

  • The Cuomo donations story gets worse: "After seven years as governor of New York, Andrew M. Cuomo has rewritten the disclaimer language on his campaign website that describes which of his appointees are banned from donating to his campaign, potentially opening the door for more appointees to contribute. [...] "But government watchdogs said putting the new language on the website was even worse than the reinterpretation itself, because it may make some appointees more likely to donate. [...] "The new disclaimer language leaves out appointees to public authorities, which represent some of the most influential bodies in state government, including the New York Thruway Authority, the New York Power Authority and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the subway, bus and commuter rail system in and around New York City." [And presumably the Battery Park City Authority...] https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/29/nyregion/cuomo-appointee-donations-campaign-finance.html — James on In the News: How Andrew Cuomo Raises Money from Political Appointments

  • These are the same landlords who had the dispute with P.J. Clarke's if I recall correctly, where they wouldn't relocate, give back space, or sell back the lease to make way for other tenants. Then there were all kinds of (alleged) construction interference lowering the business' sales, maybe not only to cripple them but to try to trigger a landlord's kick-out clause for low sales. — James on In the News: Amada Closing Date
