Last month’s Community Board 1 Tribeca Committee agenda included a “traffic calming proposal” for the Hubert/Washington intersection, and at the time, I wondered aloud what that could be about. A reader sent over the answer, above: The Department of Transportation wants to add 25 diagonal parking spaces to the north side of Hubert between West Street and Greenwich, along with various medians. How this would calm traffic remains unclear; in fact, one might logically assume that an increase in parking leads to more cars. And then there’s the question of why, when traffic goes from west to east, the spaces are angled toward the east. Or will cars have to back in? (I’m not sure whether those blocks are open street parking or limited to certain permit holders, and I’m out of town. If anyone wants to go check please let me know. I’d also be curious to know how many cars can currently park there.)
The DOT appears to be under the impression that the topic will be discussed at tonight’s CB1 Tribeca meeting, but it has yet to appear on the agenda. If you have opinions about the matter, you should absolutely contact CB1 to see if it makes the agenda, and then show up to share them.
