Sugared + Bronzed, the hair removal and faux tan spa that has dozens of locations around the country, has opened at 108 Reade, in the former Livly space just east of West Broadway. This is the chain’s seventh location in the city, and there are three others coming soon.

In 2010, when she couldn’t find a decent spray tan salon, Santa Monica resident Courtney Claghorn began offering tanning services out of her apartment, keeping her full-time job in tech. The success of her services allowed her to quit the day job and expand, starting first with the airbrush tanning services and eventually adding “sugaring,” a technique that uses a water-soluble sugar paste for hair removal.

She trains her staff in house — they are called Sugaristas or Sprayers — and has trademarked both the name and her tag line: Feel Flawless.

For sugaring, the technician applies a heated sugar paste against the natural direction of hair growth and then uses a gentle flicking motion to remove hair in the natural direction of the hair growth. The tanning solution includes oils and botanicals and lasts a week or two.

Spray tans and sugaring sessions start at $69. Appointments go till 11p on weekdays! Which is a good thing I guess — the place was full went I stopped by, and appointments on the calendar for this week are few and far between.
